Venture off the beaten track on a two-wheeled trip across Tanzania
Brimming with mighty predators and birds, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are must-visits for any Tanzania trip, but safaris are only the beginning. This unique cycling adventure has you cruising down Great Rift Valley escarpments, strolling through farm villages, roasting and grinding your own coffee, drifting off to sleep among nocturnal creatures, experiencing the culture of the Maasai people, pedalling far off the beaten track to trails where no cars go, and of course sipping sundowners at sunset. With a support vehicle at every step of the journey, take your time to discover Tanzania on two wheels.
Cycling is the perfect way to enjoy the incredible landscapes of Tanzania. When the going gets tough, ride in the support vehicle, and when it’s time to see wildlife, swap the bike for a jeep or truck
Kick off your adventure with that cornerstone of all cycling adventures – coffee. Roast, grind and taste your own in the village of Tengeru
The Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater are two of Africa’s very best wildlife arenas. Fall asleep surrounded by creatures of the African plains and take a safari in search of the rare black rhino
Venture to the weird and the wonderful – the far-out Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, Hemingway’s beloved Lake Manyara and the flamingo-dotted, deep-pink chameleon that is Lake Natron
Cycle where tourists rarely go, across the remote, barely-charted plains of Lengai in the realm of misty volcanic peaks
Enjoy the long and winding descent into the stunning Great Rift Valley, barely pedalling a single stroke
To complete this trip it is important that you are both confident and competent in riding a bicycle.
On this trip we have a single leader that rides with the group, and another that drives the support vehicle (acting as a back marker where needed)
The cycling distances are mostly short, but the roads can be rough, terrain of Tanzania can be hilly and the climate warm, so you'll need to be reasonably fit. Keep in mind the support vehicle will be on hand if you need a break.
Riding is done along both sealed and unsealed roads, but there are no special technical skills needed. Some practice at home is a great idea, however, especially for downhill sections.
There’s the possibility of a few hiccups along the way – a puncture here and there maybe – but there’s no doubt this is an incredibly rewarding adventure.
The weather in this region varies seasonally. Be prepared to get sweaty, and for the occasional cold day and night, which may require a change of plans. It's all part of the adventure!
As this trip includes participatory camping you will be expected to help put up/take down your own tent on camping days, as well as assist in cooking/cleaning duties - it's all part of the fun of camping in Africa!

An absolutely brilliant way to see Tanzania. This trip allows you to ride in the most remote areas and see Tanzania at its best. The combination of riding, local interaction and game drives was perfect. Tanzania is a beautiful country with so much to offer. The riding was challenging for me but easy for others so my advice is too come prepared to work hard and you will enjoy the benefits. The trip to the waterfall was well worth it if you have time. Thanks Justaz, Amos, Nicholas and Alex an excellent team who work together so well. A trip of a lifetime.

Amazing experience, would highly recommend this tour if you're looking to stay active while enjoying the beauty of the culture, landscape and wildlife Tanzania has to offer. Great crew of local Tanzanians/Kenyans that were super knowledgeable about East Africa. We were lucky to get Justaz as a guide who has also led many other tours around East Africa with Intrepid, including the Mt Kilimanjaro Trek so it was awesome to learn from him. Get ready for lots of physical activity and be prepared for all types of hot/cold weather. Camping in the Serengeti was amazing and very eventful, with beautiful wildlife surrounding you day & night. Would highly recommend that you participate in the Mountain of God optional hike if you enjoy these types of things, it was challenging but so worth it!
