Karibu! Welcome to Kenya. Your adventure begins in Nairobi – Kenya’s capital – with a welcome meeting at 5 pm tonight. If you and your family arrive early, maybe head out and explore the National Museum of Kenya, visit the Giraffe centre or see the highly recommended Bomas of Kenya, where traditional homesteads of several Kenyan tribes are displayed in an outdoor village. After your meeting, why not join the other families for an optional group dinner.
- Hillpark Hotel Nairobi (1 night)
There are no meals included on this day.
- Complimentary Airport Arrival Transfer (shared)
It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.
Petty theft is common in Nairobi. As a general rule, the safest place for your valuables is on your person in a neck wallet or money belt. Your hotel room or reception may also have a safe in which to store things. If you do decide to go exploring, make sure you get local advice on where it is and isn't safe to walk – particularly for later in the day. Be careful not to leave bags unattended on chairs or the floor when you're in a bar or restaurant. Without being paranoid, appearing vigilant is a great deterrence to would-be thieves. Also, make scans of important travel documents and email them to yourself – this will save you hours of time in paperwork if anything does happen.
This morning, set off for the Maasai Mara – keep an eye out for wildlife along the way! You’ll stop in Loita Hills, a remote region where the Maasai people still live much as they have for generations. Visit Tepesua Village and be greeted by Maasai Warriors with songs and dances that the kids will love joining in on. Take a walk with your hosts to the village, meet the community and see what daily life is like here. Then, step inside a traditional Maasai home, where you’ll see where the cattle are kept and learn how important they are to the Maasai. Later, head to the outskirts of the Maasai Mara where your permanent tented camp will be waiting – a fun place for the family to rest before tomorrow’s safari adventure!

If you choose to take part in the optional hot air balloon ride, you'll be picked up before dawn and taken to the launch site for a safety briefing with your pilot.
Today, journey across the Kenya–Tanzania border to your accommodation in Butiama – the birthplace of Tanzania’s first president. It’s a bit of a long travel day, so this is the perfect time to play road trip games with the family or get stuck into a book. Tonight, you’ll stay in a family-run lodge where the kids will love the chance to jump in the pool or run around the surrounding gardens.

From here, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where you’ll switch to 4WD jeeps and descend to the crater floor. The jeeps have open roofs, and the animals here are less wary of humans and vehicles, making it easier to watch them up close! Take in the sweeping views from the crater rim before heading to the bottom, where animals roam the lakes, rivers, woodlands and hills. When you arrive, meet some of the community members and join in on some of their daily activities like hunting, gathering and traditional dance. Before you book you should know
- No two journeys in Africa are identical. Be prepared for travel times to be longer or shorter than advised. Weather and road conditions can change things significantly, so embrace the detours, shortcuts, and unforgettable moments along the way.
- Staying in a permanent tented camp in the Serengeti National Park, with no barriers between you and the animals, is amazing, but it's important to heed the safety advice of your leader.
- This is a 4WD overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in 4WD vehicles, visiting remote communities and world-renowned wildlife parks.
- There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.
- The day-to-day itinerary features a selection of optional activities. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and is intended only as a guide. Prices are approximate and may change at the discretion of the local provider. All activities are subject to availability.
1. FAMILY TRIPS: Please note that these trips are for adults and children travelling together and there must be at least one child under 18 with you.
2. CHILD AGE: The minimum age for children on this trip is 5 years old.
3. CHILD PRICE: Children aged 17 years and under at time of travel on this trip, are eligible to receive 20% off the full adult price.
4. SINGLE SUPPLEMENT: A single supplement is available for adults wishing to have a private room to themselves. The single supplement applies to all nights of your trip and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.
5. COMPLIMENTARY TRANSFER: A complimentary airport arrival transfer is included; valid if you are arriving on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-tour accommodation through us. You must provide your flight details to your booking agent at least 14 days prior to travel.
6. OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES: This itinerary offers two optional sunrise balloon safaris—one in the Maasai Mara and another in Serengeti National Park. We offer both as a pre-booked service, which will guarantee you a place. If you would rather wait and try to get a better price by booking this locally on the ground, you are welcome to – but keep in mind that this is a popular activity, and places are limited.
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a third-party. The "Add connection" feature shows transit visa requirements only and does not include full entry visa needs. Please note, additional service fees apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa.
Travel and visa requirements
The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation.
Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.
If you require a Sleep Apnea Machine to sleep please ensure that it is battery operated. Lodges and Permanent Tented Camps are often powered by generators which are turned off during the night.
GENERAL ROOMING CONFIGURATIONS:
Family of two: All family groupings of two will be accommodated in a twin room.
Family of three: Wherever possible we will put you in a triple room. Please be aware that in some places triple rooms are in short supply. This means that a triple room will often be a twin room with a rollaway bed or mattress on the floor. Where triple rooms aren’t available it will be at your discretion which of your family takes the single room.
Family of four or more: You will most likely be accommodated in two twin rooms. Where possible, we will accommodate your family in a quadruple room.
While we do our very best to ensure that family groups are roomed close together (in some cases, we can arrange adjoining rooms), we can’t guarantee this. Most family holidays occur during peak season and we sometimes have little to no control over the exact placement of rooms within a hotel. Please be understanding if we are unable to room your family in immediate proximity of one another.
