If a new year isn’t the perfect excuse to travel somewhere new with your family, what is? 2018 is the time to steer away from those tried-and-tested holiday spots and choose something totally different for your tribe. With that said, these six (slightly more unusual) family-friendly destinations will definitely provide some food for thought…

1. Sri Lanka

Steeped in natural beauty and fascinating history, Sri Lanka is a truly captivating destination for all the family. Stroll around temples carved from cliffs and fortresses built on boulders. Bike your way through serene scenes of village life, and find out what life is like for those working on the lush, green tea plantations in the hill country. You can even go in search of leopards, monkeys and more on a safari across Udawalawe National Park.

2. Turkey

Exploring Saklikent Gorge

Enjoy the perfect blend of stunning scenery, rich history and thrilling activities in Turkey. Take to the ocean aboard a traditional gulet, sailing and swimming your way along the Turkish coast. Squeeze into the steep-sided Saklikent Gorge, dig into a delicious traditional Turkish breakfast, and unleash your own inner-child on a day out to Oludeniz water park. Don’t panic though, there’s plenty of free time to relax on the local beaches too!

3. The Galapagos Islands

Famous for Darwin’s voyage on the Beagle and the fact its home to some of the rarest species on the planet, make the Galapagos Islands a holiday destination like no other. You’ll all love spotting the wealth of wildlife that live here; from giant tortoises and Galapagos crabs, to blue-footed boobies and frigate birds. Not forgetting the sea life too! Snorkel with marine iguanas, sea turtles and sea lions on a family break to remember.

Tucked between Spain and France, mountainous Andorra is a great spot for an action-packed family adventure. Climb to the summit of Pic Maia, walk to the beautiful Siscaro Lakes, mountain bike across the Cortals Valley and zip line through the treetops. There’s absolutely no chance of your teenagers getting bored in the Pyrenees, especially on a trip to Noguera River, one of the top five rivers for white-water rafting in all of Europe.

Roam the world-renowned Serengeti National Park, made up of 15,000 sq km of rolling savanna, keeping an eye out for an astounding array of animals as you go. You’ll spot everything from miniature dik-dik antelopes, to lions and the noble African elephant. Plus, you’ll also have the chance to see endangered black rhinos on a safari to the Ngorongoro Crater.

6. Malta and Gozo

Discover the Maltese islands, from the dramatic coastline of Gozo to the charming streets of historic Valletta. Spend a day living life as a local Gozitan shepherd, or diving into the crystal clear seas surrounding Comino, unearthing its hidden coves as you go. Plus, with a flight time of just three hours, Malta is a short hop to sunshine, making it ideal for families with younger children that struggle with the patience for longer haul travel.
