This is the largest island in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago and is home to spectacular rugged landscapes and a treasure trove of wildlife. Each day, embark on expeditions around the island, from vast rocky coasts and silent fjords to tundra filled with colourful wildflowers. Hike the stunning 14th July Glacier, discover the ghost towns of early whaling stations in Smeerenburg and watch for prowling polar bears on the ice sheets of Phippsoya. Be on the look out for Arctic foxes, walruses, whales and a rich array of seabirds such as barnacle geese and snow buntings.
