Stunning landscapes, delectable produce, and fascinating wildlife – this special island has it all
If Tasmania is known as one of the purest and most pristine places on Earth, then Bruny Island is the perfect epitome. Not only is it bursting with natural beauty, but it’s also home to diverse wildlife including fairy penguins, fur seals, white wallabies and swift parrots. From indulging in a glass of champagne and oysters plucked straight from the surrounding ocean to hiking stunning forest-meets-coast trails, this wild and dramatic island is waiting to be explored.
Reconnect with nature among the wild seascapes and lush forests of South Bruny National Park. Loved for its diverse coastal scenery and captivating landscapes (not to mention the famous Cape Bruny Lighthouse), a couple of hours spent wandering through the park will show you what makes Bruny Island so special.
Another must-visit location on Bruny Island is Cloudy Bay – a stunning beach ideal for long walks, surfing and humpback whale spotting. Situated in South Bruny National Park, this bay feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere with minimal signs of human civilization, making it the perfect place to switch off.
Few sights on Bruny Island are as spectacular as the view from Truganini Lookout. Located at The Neck (the isthmus connecting north and south Bruny Island), this lookout is named after Truganini, a prominent Nuenonne woman from Bruny Island who died in 1876. While it can be a bit of a hike to get up there, the 360° views at the top are worth every step.
After all that exploring, you’re bound to work up an appetite. Thankfully, Bruny Island is one of the best places to be when you’re craving delicious local produce. Whether you fancy sitting underneath leafy eucalyptus trees as you sample some of Tasmania’s best cheeses or sipping on cool climate wines at a family-run vineyard, your tastebuds will be more than satisfied here.

A very enjoyable trip. The Hartz Peak walk was a highlight. Dinners were generous. Accommodation was simple but a warm shower and clean bed were all that was required at the end of a long walk. Stacey and Jai were fantastic guides and very knowledgeable about Tasmanian history, flora and fauna.

The Tasmanian Explorer exceeded expectations with stunning coastlines, beautiful national parks, quaint villages and modern cities. Our group leader Anthony was born in Rosebery, raised in Hobart, and has worked all over Tasmania. His ability to weave personal anecdotes, stories, music, and surprises into the itinerary was magical. Absolutely outstanding. As usual we had a fun group of well-traveled fellow travelers. The island under down under definitely didn’t disappoint.

Quality tour with way more in the itinerary than expected. Our tour guide Anthony was brilliant at hosting and his local knowledge and inviting, calm personality made this trip both comfortable and memorable. Tasmania has so much to offer and this tour covers so much of all the magnificent regions - Coastal, Tarkine, Wine and Colonial. My first tour with Intrepid and I will be booking with them again. The small group of just 11 and all the meals, accomodation and almost all entry fees included made it easy to just sit back and enjoy although this is a busy and full schedule 9 day tour with a good balance of hikes and little luxuries. Value for money. Anthony was an exceptional host - professional, organised, knowledgable, friendly, approachable and went the extra mile to ensure we all enjoyed our tour. He is certainly working the dream job for him and it shows. Intrepid are fortunate to have him representing them he made our tour. Thank you Anthony I truly believe our trip was elevated to the next level when we were allocated you as our Leader.

There's only one way to get to Bruny Island and that's on the Bruny Island Ferry. There's also no public transport on the island, so you'll also need to take a car on the ferry if you're not joining us on a small group trip.
You'll struggle to get around Bruny Island if you don't have a car, as there's no public transport or car rental services. This means you'll have to take a car onto the ferry so you can explore with ease.
Bruny Island has a cool temperate climate with four distinct seasons. There's not really a 'best' time to visit as each season is special in its own way.
However, the island shines in summer when the weather is warm and sunny, and extended daylight hours mean you can explore well into the evening.
Winters are cool and wet, but great for getting cozy with a cool climate wine, while autumn and spring see mild weather and smaller crowds.
Bruny Island is home to abundant native wildlife. Here are some of the local critters you may be lucky to spot on your trip:
White wallabies
Fairy penguins
Swift parrots
Short tail shearwaters
Forty spotted pardalotes
