Why you'll love this trip
- Discover the golden beaches and age-old fishing villages that make Goa one of India’s most popular retreats – and a perfect place to consider extending your southern India adventure.
- Make the most of free time in Varkala, Madurai and Mysore with all the best recommendations from your local leader. Wile the afternoons away on the beach, visit nearby temples or uncover local culture at the museums.
- Glide through the backwaters of Kerala on an optional pole boat ride, going ashore for a village stay – a scenic break from hotels and a perfect way to get close to local customs and culture.
- Cross into Kochi – a major port city in India’s southwest. Explore the seaside Fort Kochi area and consider watching a traditional Kathakali dance performance in your free time.
- Opt to visit a spice plantation in Periyar and breathe in the scents of cardamom, pepper, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. Then, maybe go on an optional guided nature walk at Periyar National Park where you can look out for tiger tracks.
Itinerary
Welcome to India! Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting this evening at 6 pm. Tonight is all about introductions, so maybe get together with your group after your meeting and head out for an optional dinner – your leader will be able to suggest the best neighbourhoods for a delicious local meal.
- Hotel (1 night)
There are no meals included on this day.
It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.
Kerala is officially a dry state, with alcohol sales and consumption limited to bars in five-star hotels.
In the morning, travel up the coast by private vehicle to the town of Varkala. Settle into your hotel, then you’ll have free time to explore the Keralan coast – home to some of India’s best beaches. Soaring cliffs protect Varkala’s sandy bay and, depending on the time of year, dolphins can be spotted from high up on the rocks. In the evening, maybe head into town to one of the numerous restaurants serving fresh, local seafood caught right off the coast.
- Resort (1 night)
There are no meals included on this day.
Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours.
Today is a free day for you to discover Varkala at your own pace. This is a great place to sit back and relax, but if you want to get active, there are plenty of water activities on offer, like surfing and windsurfing. Even though this is a popular destination for Indian tourists, the beaches are quiet and have a laidback vibe. Take the rest of the day to relax, beachside or otherwise, before the rest of south India beckons.
- Resort (1 night)
There are no meals included on this day.
This morning, board a train along the Keralan coastline to Alappuzha (Alleppey). Once an important trading port and now renowned for the annual Snake Boat race in August, Alappuzha is the starting point for most journeys into the Kerala backwaters. An auto-rickshaw will take you from the train station to your boat, which will take you to an island village. You’ll spend the night at a homestay owned and managed by a local family. Get settled, then you’ll have the option to explore the Kerala backwaters in a pole boat. Your local guide will also take you on a walk around the village, through paddy fields and small canals. This is a great opportunity for you to learn about the local ways of the backwaters.
- Local Guesthouse (1 night)
- Lunch
- Dinner
- Kerala Backwaters - Guided village walk
- Kerala Backwaters - Pole boat ride - INR500
Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.
Accommodation tonight may be on a multishare basis depending on group configuration. Food is traditional Keralan home-style cooking and will be served at the main guesthouse. Standards and configuration of rooms may differ between guesthouses.
In the morning, cross the backwaters by private boat back to Alappuzha. You’ll then take a local bus to Kochi, arriving around midday. When you arrive, go for a walk around the Fort Kochi area, where you’ll be staying for the next two nights. In the early evening, there’s the option to attend a classic Kathakali dance performance – a snapshot into traditional cultures of this region.

This morning, get ready for a day of travel as you head by private vehicle to Periyar National Park. After checking in to your hotel, you might like to head out on an optional tour of a local spice farm. Walk through the winding pathways among the plantations as the scent of cardamom, pepper, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla lingers in the air. Take in the beauty of the cardamom flowers, feel the cool breeze and watch the sunlight seep in through the leaves of the pepper plants surrounding you. Afterwards, enjoy a relaxed evening back at your accommodation, maybe settling in for an early night.

There are no meals included on this day.
- Periyar - Spice plantation visit - INR200
Your travel time today will be approximately 8 hours.
Today is a free day – maybe head out on an optional walk around Periyar National Park. Encounters with animals in the wild are never guaranteed, and this is more of a jungle walk than an animal-spotting tour, but do keep an eye out for tiger tracks, spotted deer, Indian elephants or gaur – the world's largest species of buffalo. This afternoon, you might like to unwind with an optional ayurvedic massage, watch a performance of Kalaripayattu (an ancient Indian martial art) or just relax in your scenic surroundings.
- Hotel (1 night)
There are no meals included on this day.
- Periyar - Guided nature walk - INR1400
For today’s optional walk in Periyar National Park, you will usually follow the Green Zone route. Please note that tigers are extremely rare and shy in Periyar National Park. It is, however, a lovely walk. The local guides are villagers who have lived in the area for generations and are very knowledgeable about the area’s flora and fauna. Bring water – you’ll start walking early, but it gets very hot and humid later in the morning. Leech socks are available to rent for a small fee – this is one critter that you often will spot!
In the morning, take a private transfer to Madurai. This buzzing city is crammed full of bazaars, pilgrims and cycle rickshaws. Go on a walking tour to see the highlights, then maybe visit the Sri Meenakshi Temple. This ancient temple is still in use and features a labyrinth of lamplit corridors leading to shrines.

Today is a free day in Madurai. Consider heading to the Gandhi Museum to learn about the man who fought for India’s independence or wander through the 1000 pillars of Aayiram Kaal Mandapam. This is also a great opportunity to haggle with vendors at the bazaars and the tailors' market. This evening, you’ll take an overnight sleeper train to Mysore. Before you board, you may want to stock up on some extra snacks for the journey.

Disembark from your train and transfer to your hotel in Mysore – an easy-going town with a pleasant climate. Go on an orientation walk with your group, checking out the ornate Mysore Palace along the way. You could climb up Chamundi Hill to the Sri Chamundeswari Temple at the top, which is dedicated to the goddess Durga. At around 7 pm tonight, meet up with your group and board an overnight train to Hampi.

Once you’re settled in, make an optional visit to the architectural masterpiece of Vittala Temple. Your travel time today will be approximately 12 hours, including 9 hours on the overnight train.
Once your train arrives in Goa, head to the hotel and check in. When you travel with us, The Intrepid Foundation gives you more opportunities to support important causes in destinations you visit.
Why choose us
We’re adventure travel experts with decades of experience and proud to run trips in over 100 countries.
We keep our group sizes small and our experiences big, so you can get more out of your travels.
Leaders don’t just show off a destination, they’re the heart and soul of our trips.
The Intrepid Foundation gives back globally and our B Corp status is proof that we're dedicated to creating a positive impact.
Before you book you should know
- This is a trip made for travellers who value their independence but also want the benefit of a local leader and a group of like-minded travellers. The itinerary has a mix of included activities and free time when your leader will offer suggestions. Please budget spending money for optional activities you want to take part in and transport to and from them.
- We are covering a lot of distance in a vast country, so this trip involves some early starts and long train rides. Sleeper trains are a quintessential Indian travel experience. They’re a great way to travel long distances and maximise your time in each place. You’ll be travelling alongside locals, as well as Intrepid travellers, in a compartment of mixed genders. You’ll find more details about the experience in the Accommodation section of the Essential Trip Information, or you can read more about it here: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/adventures/india-trains-guide/.
- This trip runs year-round, so it’s important to be aware of just how hot it can get in India in the summer months and choose the season that best suits you.
- We've sourced our accommodation carefully and picked the best possible hotels in line with the Intrepid style of travel. Service and accommodation in India may be different from Western standards.
ACCOMMODATION:
Some of the accommodation along the way is basic or simple, staying in local guesthouses and homestays. Some may have shared bathroom facilities with cold water only. We use a mixture of air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned rooms. Some areas of India experience daily load shedding. This is where the power may be turned off at certain times of the day and usually occurs for a few hours in the early afternoon. Most hotel properties have a restaurant or cafe serving local meals. Many restaurants and hotels do not serve alcohol for religious reasons or due to local laws.
SHOWERS:
Showers at some hotels only have hot water at peak times (usually morning and evening). Outside of these times, you may need to speak to reception to obtain hot water.
ROOM ISSUES:
If you have any issues with your room, please speak to the hotel and your tour leader right away rather than your travel agent so that the problem can be addressed without delay.
SLEEPER TRAINS IN INDIA
Sleeper trains are clean and air-conditioned. They’re a great way to travel long distances and maximise your time in each place. Depending on the route, you’ll travel in 2AC or 3AC class. Not all classes are available on all routes.
2AC carriages (second class or 2 tier AC carriages) have four sleeping berths in the compartment section and two berths in the aisle bay.
3AC carriages (third class or 3 tier AC carriages) have six sleeping berths in the compartment section and two berths in the aisle bay.
During the day, sleeping berths are folded away and serve as seats. Each sleeping berth has a padded mattress with sheets, pillow and a blanket provided. Some travellers like to bring their own sleeping sheet.
Your luggage travels with you in the compartment, so packing light will make your journey more comfortable.
Each carriage has a limited number of sinks and charging points. There are toilets at both ends of the carriage, one a western-style toilet and the other a squat toilet. You will need to bring your own toilet paper, and you may like to bring sanitiser wipes.
Some trains have a dining carriage, but there’s no shortage of vendors who board at each station, selling tea, coffee, snacks and local favourites. You can also grab something at the station before boarding your train, or at a station en route.
Sleeping berths are allocated by Indian Railways’ reservation system, which we have no influence over. Regardless of when tickets are booked, your group may not travel together, with sleeping berths spread throughout a carriage, or multiple carriages, of the same class. You may share a compartment with local travellers of mixed genders. Your leader will do their best to swap with other travellers to enable people who booked together to travel together, but this isn’t always possible. Your leader may ask male travellers to swap with female travellers due to safety considerations.
Due to the complexity of the ticket purchasing system and high demand for tickets, we are unable to offer upgrades to other classes.
