- Stay up late to see the northern sky dance with green light. The aurora borealis is the best lightshow on Earth, and this trip is your ticket (subject to weather conditions).
- Travel on the famous 'Santa Claus Express' overnight train all the way from Helsinki through the frozen northern wilderness to Rovaniemi.
- Unwind in a traditional Finnish smoke sauna at a family-owned reindeer farm in Yllastunturi or in Helsinki. This millennia-old ritual is said to have healing and meditative benefits.
Itinerary
Hei! Welcome to Finland. Your adventure begins in Helsinki with a welcome meeting at 6 pm, where you’ll meet your leader and fellow travellers. If you arrive early, maybe head out and pick up some local souvenirs at the lively Market Square or explore the Design District. Finnish architecture is revered around the world for its simplicity and deep connection with nature – just walk around Senate Square and see for yourself! After your welcome meeting, maybe get your group together to sample some traditional dishes, like karjalanpiirakka (Karelian pies) or ruisleipa (rye bread).
- Hotel (1 night)
There are no meals included on this day.
- Helsinki - Group welcome meeting
It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.
After breakfast, join your leader on an orientation walk around Finland’s capital city. Once you get your bearings, the rest of the day is free to explore Helsinki as you wish. Maybe check out the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, located just a ferry ride away on a group of islands off the coast of Helsinki. The fortress was originally built by the Swedish to protect against Russian expansion. You could also acquaint yourself with Finnish sauna culture by visiting a public sauna to unwind. This evening, board the famous 'Santa Claus Express', a comfortable overnight train to Rovaniemi, known to many as the hometown of Santa Claus.

- Helsinki - Orientation Walk (Leader Led)
- Helsinki to Rovaniemi - Santa Claus Express Overnight Train
Your travel time on the overnight train will be approximately 12 hours.
Overnight trains on this trip are usually comfortable double deckers, with two berths to a cabin. Please note that cabins are allocated on a mixed gender basis and, depending on the group size, some group members might share a cabin with passengers that are not part of our group. All cabins have heating and there are shared bathrooms at the end of each carriage.
Breakfast is not included tomorrow, so we recommend either buying something in town beforehand or using the restaurant carriage on the train.
This morning, wake up in Rovaniemi – the capital of Finnish Lapland – and disembark from your train. Continue by private vehicle to a family-run guesthouse deep in the Finnish forest. This location will be your base for the next three nights, situated near Yllastunturi, a popular cross-country and downhill skiing destination. If the skies are clear tonight, take a stroll through the snow and look skywards for the dancing green lights of the aurora borealis. Far away from the city light pollution, the guesthouse is an ideal base to spot the Northern Lights. This natural display of coloured lights in the night sky is often visible in the high northern hemisphere – there's even an open-top shelter nearby from which to observe them. Grab a hot drink, wrap up and head out into the winter wonderland.
- Guesthouse (1 night)
- Breakfast
- Yllästunturi - Northern Light Viewing Opportunity (subject to weather conditions)
Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.
In Yllastunturi, the guesthouse is situated about 3 km from the town centre, in quiet forest surroundings. Breakfast is included and dinner is available for purchase at the guesthouse’s cafeteria (you can pre-order the day before, subject to minimum numbers). A variety of optional activities can also be booked through the accommodation. Alternatively, there are restaurants and supermarkets a short taxi ride or a 35-minute walk away. Don't forget to take your torch as it gets dark early at these latitudes.
You’ll be provided with an additional rental package for extreme winter conditions in Yllastunturi. This will include boots, cold outwear, gloves, a pair of woollen socks and balaclavas.
The streetlights of Yllastunturi are turned off at 10 pm from November to mid-February to enhance the visibility of the Northern Lights. While there’s a good chance of seeing the aurora this far north, it’s important to note that it’s a natural phenomenon, and weather conditions can affect visibility. You can download several apps that provide current and forecasted aurora activity worldwide. Some apps even offer a function to alert you when the aurora becomes visible in your location.
Make sure you wrap up for today’s adventures – you'll be racing across the landscape on the back of a dog sled! These incredible huskies are in their element, barking excitedly before darting along sprawling trails. With the wind in your hair, ride through the snow as your new four-legged friends pull you forward. After the ride, warm up by an open fire and try some pulla (sweet Finnish cardamom bread). If you’re lucky, you might even get to give the dogs a pet and a cuddle.
- Guesthouse (1 night)
- Breakfast
- Yllästunturi - Dog Sledding
Some years, snowfall arrives late in northern Finland. In these cases, snow-based activities can’t be offered – however we’ll work with our local operator to offer you suitable alternatives.
The scheduling of the included activities may vary on each trip, so please consult your trip leader when planning your free time and optional activities.
Your next adventure in Yllastunturi takes you on a visit to a local family, who will guide you through their traditional lifestyle. Their reindeer farm has been operating since 1861, and you may have the opportunity to feed and watch these incredible animals go about their daily routine. You'll also get a look at their skills in reindeer herding with the option to get up close and personal with some of the animals on the farm. Then, why not experience a traditional Finnish bath on the farm? Finnish sauna culture has a millennia-old history and is integral to the Finnish national identity. Locals swear by the cleansing, healing and meditative properties of having a steam and a wash in the sauna. There is also an opportunity to try ice swimming afterwards!

Leaders don’t just show off a destination, they’re the heart and soul of our trips.
The Intrepid Foundation gives back globally and our B Corp status is proof that we're dedicated to creating a positive impact.
Before you book you should know
- Please keep your luggage as small and light as possible. You'll be travelling on public transport where storage space is limited. You'll need to be able to lift your luggage into storage racks, walk across cobblestone streets with it and carry it up and down stairs.
- Lapland can be extremely cold at this time of year. Please bring appropriate clothing for adverse weather conditions. Please see the Packing section in the Essential Trip Information for more details. There may be the rare occasion where your leader has to alter the itinerary and activities due to the weather. In this case, an alternative will be offered.
- In cases where there is no snow cover available, snow dependent activities will be replaced with suitable alternatives.
- The Northern Lights (also known as the aurora borealis) are a natural display of coloured lights in the night sky of the northern hemisphere. While Northern Light displays can never be guaranteed, you have a higher chance of seeing them in locations at high latitudes, such as northern Finland. Keep your fingers crossed for clear skies and sufficient solar activity during your visit.
- As accommodation on this trip is twin-share, single travellers will share a room with another traveller of the same gender. This is a great opportunity to get to know other like-minded people, so embrace it while you can. However, if you’d prefer not to share, a single room supplement is available at an additional charge. Please ask your booking agent for more details.
- Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together or apart. Many guesthouses offer shared bathrooms rather than ensuite facilities. Rooms in Finland can be small, and at times you may be accommodated a short walk away from the main building.
- Finland can be an expensive destination in terms of eating out. Your leader will be able to advise on how to save money. In Yllastunturi, the only option for dinner will be at the guesthouse we are staying at, or alternatively there are cafes and restaurants in the nearby town (approximately 35 minutes on foot, or a short taxi ride away).
1. This trip concludes on Day 6 upon arrival in Rovaniemi at approximately midday. If you plan to stay in Rovaniemi, you will need to arrange your own accommodation. Alternatively, you may continue your onward journey to Helsinki.
2. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip, subject to availability. The price of the single supplement does not include the night of Day 2 - Overnight Train. Due to the small properties we use in Europe there is only a limited amount of single supplements available. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.
3. Lapland can be extremely cold at this time of year. Please bring appropriate clothing for adverse weather conditions. During Days 3-5 you will be given additional snowsuits from our local hosts as part of your package. These outdoor outfits are intended to be used on top of your own warm clothes or used to keep your main clothes dry. Please see the Packing section in the Essential Trip Information document for more details on what is available for hire in location and what we recommend you should bring along.
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a third-party. The "Add connection" feature shows transit visa requirements only and does not include full entry visa needs. Please note, additional service fees apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa.

OCCASIONAL ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION
The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline. On rare occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our usual accommodation. A similar standard of accommodation will be used in these instances.
TWIN SHARE BASIS
Accommodation on this trip is on a twin basis. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. Please note there may be times where facilities will be shared rather than ensuite and rare occasions when you share a room with passengers travelling on different Intrepid trips than your own.
CHECK-IN TIME
Throughout the trip we request that our hotels prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination.
PRE/POST TRIP ACCOMMODATION
If you've purchased pre-trip or post-trip accommodation (if available), you may be required to change rooms from your trip accommodation for these extra nights.
FACILITIES
Your accommodation may not always have private en suite facilities or air-conditioning. European hotels generally don't provide kettles or fridges.
