Arriving in San Jose early? Consider taking an Urban Adventures day tour to see the city through the eyes of a local. Find out more at https://www.urbanadventures.com/en/san-jose.
Depart San Jose early this morning and begin your journey through the lush Caribbean lowlands to the wildlife-rich village of Tortuguero. Drive to the port at La Pavona, then hop aboard a boat. Continue to your lodge, located in the heart of this biodiverse region where the rainforest lines the coast. Check in and settle into your room, then the rest of your day is free. There's the option to go on a turtle nesting tour later this evening – a portion of the cost of this activity goes towards supporting a program to patrol the beach for poachers, helping to keep the turtles and their eggs safe. Otherwise, you can simply relax at your accommodation.

Before you book you should know
- This trip is for travellers who appreciate a bit of independence. You'll get plenty of free time in each location to make your own choices, do your own activities and eat where you like. Your leader is always there to give you tips and suggestions.
- Many of the activities on this trip (both included and optional) take place in the great outdoors. This means you'll need to be prepared to deal with insects and, occasionally, rustic conditions. It's all part of immersing yourself in this natural paradise.
- Costa Rica is generally hot and humid year-round, and from May to October it can be wet, too. At night and in locations at higher elevations, it can get chilly. Protect yourself from the sun, stay hydrated and bring a waterproof jacket and light clothing you can layer. Please carefully consider which time of the year you'll feel most comfortable travelling.
- Costa Rica is a popular destination and can sometimes be expensive. Expect to pay more than you would in other Central American countries for many things.
The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation.
Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.
