When you arrive, settle into your accommodation or relax on the banks of the nearby Nile River. This is a popular street food in Uganda and is even more delicious than it sounds! After, travel to Kibale Forest National Park – a tropical rainforest home to 13 species of primates, which is more than any other forest in East Africa! Here you might see the chimpanzee, the most famous resident here, as well as the olive baboon, the blue monkey and 375 species of birds! If you’re lucky, you might even be able to spot one of the more elusive forest elephants and leopards while you’re here. When you arrive, settle into your accommodation and relax or perhaps head out to explore your surroundings with the group.

Your travel time today will be approximately 8 hours.
Led by expert trackers, you’ll set off into the dense rainforest of Kibale in search of chimpanzees. This hike can be challenging at times, with muddy paths and thick vegetation, but the reward is well worth it – the chance to observe these amazing creatures in their natural habitat. Watch as they play, feed and communicate with each other in the trees high above. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided walk through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary – a community-run initiative rich in birdlife, monkeys and different butterfly species. If you’re lucky, you might spot the great blue turaco, the bird this wetland is best known for. Later, return to your accommodation for a free evening. Maybe grab a drink or two with your new friends and toast to the incredible day of adventure.

Then, continue your journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Take in the scenery as you pass rolling green hills, tea plantations and crater lakes, or simply relax with a book or chat with your group. You’ll also pass through a local village where you’ll have the chance to stop for lunch and coffee. Maybe get to know the Batooro and Bakiiga communities that live here with an optional local village visit, then carry on to Bwindi. This morning, join a local guide and experienced trackers as you climb through the rugged, mountainous terrain of Bwindi National Park in search of mountain gorillas. Your first glimpse of these creatures will be a truly beautiful moment, and visits are strictly controlled to minimise disturbance. Tracking gorillas is not an easy feat (it's called Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for a reason!). It can be wet, muddy, strenuous and uncomfortable, but the indescribable feeling of coming across a group of gorillas is worth the effort. Spend a mesmerising hour with the gorillas as they eat, sleep, groom and play as the male silverback watches over them. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the lush wilderness of the rainforest, then, return to camp where you can freshen up with a hot shower. In the afternoon, you’ll also have the chance to take an optional visit to the Batwa community to learn about their forest heritage. Tonight, enjoy a hearty dinner by the crackling fireplace.

You will be provided with a walking stick and the option to hire a porter who can carry your day pack and assist you on the trek. It costs 20 USD to hire a porter, plus an optional tip. Hiring a porter not only makes your trek easier but also encourages local communities to embrace gorilla conservation and tourism. Some porters are ex-poachers who now recognise the value in gorilla conservation practices.
Say goodbye to Bwindi and begin the journey to Lake Mburo. This is Uganda’s smallest savannah park, but it packs a punch with the variety of landscapes, from woodlands and rolling hills to wetlands and lakes. This afternoon, you’ll have the option to join a game drive, where you’ll have the chance to spot zebras, hippos, buffaloes and even impalas. This is the home of the Maasai people and when you arrive, you’ll grab some lunch then visit the Maasai, known for their dazzling red dress and elaborate jewellery. Gain an insight into the culture and ancient ways of this proud East African community. A local elder will deliver a fascinating talk about the Maasai and what they're about. Before you book you should know
- No two journeys in east Africa are identical. Be prepared for travel times to be longer than advised. Weather and road conditions can change things significantly, so embrace the detours, shortcuts and unforgettable moments along the way. There will be lots of time spent travelling in a private vehicle with your group, but it’s a great way to get to know your fellow travellers.
- Tracking gorillas in the dense forest can sometimes be wet, muddy and uncomfortable. The terrain is by no means easy either, so it can be strenuous and often humid. The sheer thrill of coming across a habituated group of gorillas, dominated by a great male silverback, more than outweighs any difficulty. You need to be prepared and fit enough to walk up to four hours – up and down hills.
- 4WD vehicles are used in Uganda. You will travel in convoy style and due to the configuration of the vehicles there may be times when you are not travelling with your leader. In Kenya and Tanzania, the trip is an overland trip. This means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent, occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, waking up before sunrise and getting the best possible views of Africa's iconic wildlife. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page at https://www.intrepidtravel.com/au/africa/overland.
- In Loita Hills, you'll be staying in a secure bush camp with basic facilities. Hot bucket showers are available in the morning. Wi-fi is not available and only minimal upgrades are on offer.
- Camping in the Serengeti National Park with no barriers between you and the animals is amazing, but it's important to heed the safety advice of your leader. Your leader will brief you in detail on how to set up camp so as to deter animals from entering the campsite.
OCCASIONAL ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION
The style of accommodation indicated in the Itinerary is a guideline. On rare occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our usual accommodation. A similar standard of accommodation will be used in these instances.
TWIN SHARE
Accommodation on this trip is on a twin share basis, unless otherwise stated in the Itinerary. There may be times when facilities are shared, rather than ensuite, which will also be mentioned in the Itinerary if applicable.
CHECK-IN TIME
Throughout the trip we request that hotels prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn't always possible. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination before checking in.
PRE/POST TRIP ACCOMMODATION
If you've purchased pre-trip or post-trip accommodation (subject to availability), you may be required to change rooms from your trip accommodation for these extra nights.
Accommodation on this trip is mainly in two-person canvas dome tents with camping mattresses supplied.
The type and variety of accommodation are determined by conditions on each of our routes. Each route is different - on some, we use a mixture of campsites and wild camps; on others, we also use hotels. In Africa, it's not usually practical to camp when staying in towns and cities, so we use hotel accommodations and eat out in local restaurants.
There may be the occasional night stop when we stay on the grounds of a hotel or at a campsite, which may also have rooms/cabins available. In this case, there may be a choice of camping or upgrading to a room. Rooms cost approximately USD 40-100 per room per night for a twin room and cannot be pre-booked. Standards of these rooms vary greatly, and we recommend viewing the room before purchasing the night's accommodation. The day-by-day itinerary advises when upgrades may be possible (subject to availability).
Keep in mind that if we are staying in dormitory accommodation, you may have to share with other passengers or be split into same-sex rooms.
Campsites do have facilities, but they usually aren't to the same standard you would find in Western countries. For example, the bathroom facilities can be very basic. Toilet paper is rarely provided, and shower facilities can be as simple as a hose pipe spurting out cold water. Wild camps have no facilities at all.
At times, there may be spare tents in the vehicles. Unfortunately, these cannot be used without the purchase of a single supplement. This is to ensure the tents avoid wear and tear or are clean and ready for the customers arriving on the next section of the trip.

Important notes
1. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement applies to all nights of your trip and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.
2. You have the choice on Day 19 of finishing your trip in Arusha or Nairobi. If you are continuing on to Nairobi, please do not book any flights until after 9pm this evening.
3. If you are booking within 60 days of departure, we need to confirm gorilla permit availability.
4. Some governments currently have increased foreign travel advice around security in place for Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda. Please check your government’s foreign travel advice before departure and ensure your travel insurance covers all destinations and activities on your itinerary.
5. An optional sunrise balloon ride in the Maasai Mara National Reserve and Serengeti National Park are possible on this itinerary. Please see Days 13 & 16 for full details of this activity. As the balloon only holds 16 people, places are limited and we recommend that you book in advance. Please inquire when booking your trip to book this optional activity.
