If you're wondering whether you need a visa for Bali, we've put together this guide to help you. It's worth noting that the visa requirements for Bali also apply to the rest of Indonesia

Do you need a visa for Bali?

The short answer is maybe – depending on your nationality. Passport holders from over 60 countries (including the UK, Australia and the United States) can enter Indonesia with a free tourist visa on arrival which allows you to stay for 30 days for tourism purposes. An immigration officer will date stamp your passport when you arrive and you will not be able to extend your stay. If you overstay there are hefty fines of IDR 1,000,000 (approximately 70 USD) per day.

If there's a chance you might want to stay longer than 30 days, you'll need to pay for a visa on arrival or apply for one prior to travelling at an overseas Indonesian consulate or embassy.

Visa on Arrival (VOA)

If you love Bali and want to stay a little longer, you can buy a VOA if you're arriving at Ngurah Rai International Airport, the main airport in Bali. This visa allows you to stay in Indonesia for 30 days and can be extended for another 30 days onshore. This visa costs approximately 35 USD in cash, however you can pay in several currencies including AUD and EUR.

You can extend this visa yourself or through an agent. It's cheaper to do it yourself, but you'll need to visit an Immigration office a couple of times to lodge your forms and collect your passport when the visa extension has been processed. Paying the extra for an agent may save time and hassle, and you may also be able to pay for a quicker turnaround.

Social and Business Visa

If you'll be visiting Indonesia for an extended period, or you're heading to Bali for work, the Social and Business Visa allows you to stay for up to six months. To get this visa you'll need a sponsor and a visa agent as more documentation is required. The cost of this visa varies depending on the agent, but typically it costs around 350 USD.

Visa on Arrival requirements for Bali

To enter Bali you’ll need to meet the following requirements:

  • proof of onward or return ticket
  • proof of funds to pay for your expenses during your trip
  • completed immigration card (this will usually be given to you on the plane or at the arrival terminal)
  • a passport that is valid for at least 6 months – local laws require that you must be able to show your valid passport at any time when required to do so by an immigration office. We recommend taking a clear photocopy of your passport photo page, and visa (after arriving), to carry around with you.

If you're travelling on a visa-free short visit, you must enter and exit from certain airports and seaports in Indonesia including:

  • Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta Airport)
  • Bali (Ngurah Rai Airport)
  • Yogyakarta (Adisucipto Airport)
  • Surabaya (Juanda Airport)

This currently excludes entry and exit from Lombok (Bandar Udara International Airport). Visa-free short visits cannot be extended and cannot be transferred to another type of visa.
