Why you'll love this trip
  • Track rhinos on foot in Matobo National Park, home to a diverse range of flora and fauna including warthogs, leopards, and klipsingers. Learn about the park's cultural significance and San rock paintings.
  • Spot elephants, hippos, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, wildebeest, impalas and more on not one but two included 4WD safari game drives in Tanzania and Zambia.
  • Visit the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust to learn about the rehabilitation of wildlife from poaching and get the chance to meet some rescued or orphaned wildlife currently in their care.
  • Discover the magic of South Luangwa National Park on a morning and afternoon 4x4 safari game drive with local expert guides, and visit a workshop where local women transform poaching snare wire into jewellery to raise funds for conservation.
  • The east of Africa isn’t all just roaming wildlife and open plains. Along the way, get to know some of the region's vibrant cities, including Lusaka, Harare and Bulawayo.
  • Journey from the interior plains out to some idyllic Indian Ocean hotspots. Stroll along the shores in Dar es Salaam and consider extending your stay in paradisiacal Zanzibar.

Is this trip right for you?
  • This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent (unless you’re on an Original or Comfort style trip), occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, and getting the best possible views of the ‘big five’. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The drive days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/au/africa/overland
  • There are many excellent optional activities on this trip. We recommend taking this into consideration when budgeting for your adventure.
  • As the early bird catches the worm, the early camper sights the animals. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.
  • Please note that some passengers on this trip will have been travelling together prior to the start of your trip. To see what you're missing out on check out our Cape Town to Zanzibar trip – search trip code UXOBC on the Intrepid website for more information and how to book.

My tour with Intrepid was a fantastic experience. The Intrepid customer service in UK were always in hand to answer queries and support me. Also the 3 man team who came on the tour were brilliant. Positive, kind and helpful people always looking out for us and providing everything we needed. My 20 day trip round Africa was a phenomenal experience. Great campsites, upgrades always available, tasty food and a lovely group of travellers. I saw so much if Africa and think that only by driving through all the different countries do you get an authentic feel about African life. The safaris were breathtaking with informative guides. The cultural sites were also impressive and there was also the chance to do more physical activities if you wanted something more challenging/exciting. Zanzibar in particular was a highlight in beautiful beach bungalows and I also enjoyed seeing the big rock of Zimbabwe. Thank you Intrepid for an unforgettable experience that is sensitive to the needs of the communities we visited. I learnt a lot and think it changed my perspective in a number of ways as well as teaching me more about another continent. Where next?..........

Highly recommend Intrepid! Really great itineraries led by amazing guides, drivers, and cooks. If you’re thinking of a longer trip, don’t worry if you don’t see reviews - look at the reviews for each section. This section was especially amazing because of the relationships built throughout the trip

Would not advise to go on this trip; unless you want to see and do nothing for 17 days. Long travel days, utterly exhausting days and a overall pointless trip that is not worth the money. Choose another trip and do your research before booking.

Overall, this trip feels like a wander off the beaten-path. It’s an enriching experience to see animals in their natural habitat. Im grateful to the team that made it possible!

Don’t do this as a stand-alone trip. If you are doing a longer Africa trip, then you can put up with the long travel days, few included activities and poor campsites. Far more fun trips are available in Africa. Choose them!
