In the real world Henry Thoreau, Ansel Adams and Bear Grylls could never meet (what a camping trip that would be). But this is something we think they’d all enjoy: the US National Park Service centennial. Yep, this year the NPS turns 100. To celebrate, we didn't make a cake, but we did make something more our style: four one-off active expeditions through the spectacular American wilderness.

In 2016, we'll be biking through southern Utah, kayaking in Yellowstone, sailing off the coast of Florida and hiking beneath California’s ancient sequoia trees. As Thoreau said, it’s time to “rise free from care before the dawn, and seek small group travel adventures,” (okay, that last part was us). See you on the trail.

Visit Yellowstone, the granddaddy of national parks

If nature had a granddaddy, this’d be it. The world’s first national park, Yellowstone is synonymous with the American wilderness. Because we respect our elders, this expedition has been carefully designed to take in the best of the park’s waterfalls, canyons and geysers.

We’ll show you the highlights on a guided drive before veering off-road – Intrepid style – for a full day of hiking. Then we’ll head to nearby Grand Teton National Park for two days of kayaking, trekking and camping on a secluded island in Jackson Lake. It doesn’t get wilder than this.  View trip here

Go trekking in the wild wild west

We’re going to call it: California’s greedy. Not only does it boast famous cities (and the best avocados) – it’s also home to spectacular deserts, lakes and the world’s tallest trees. This year, we’re growing out our beards and attempting another superlative: summiting Mt Whitney, the highest mountain in the lower 48 states.

But don’t worry: you don’t have to be an expert to join us. We’ll be taking the scenic route through the redwood groves of Sequoia National Park and pine forests of the Pacific Crest Trail, all with the support of experienced guides and pack mules.  Find out more

See southern Utah from the seat of a bike

Utah has a way of getting under your skin. Sure, partly that’s just dust, but it’s more than that. From the fiery reds and pinks of Zion National Park to the rocky hoodoos of Bryce Canyon, Utah is nothing short of spectacular. And what better way to immerse yourself in all its craggy glory than on this epic two-wheeled adventure?

We’ll spend a full day in both Bryce and Zion National Parks, so you’ll get an in-depth experience of both. Let us provide the bikes, the leaders and full vehicular support; you just focus on that scenery.  Keen?  Check the trip out here.

Western USA Highlights

Unlock the secrets of Florida Keys on a sailboat

There’s a lot more to Florida than plastic flamingos and Miami Vice. The Florida Keys offer some of the most pristine coastal scenery in the US of A, and call us self-indulgent, but we reckon the best way to see it is aboard a private yacht.

We’ll be setting sail for the least-visited national park in the country – the Dry Tortugas archipelago, dropping by military forts and (real) bird sanctuaries, before continuing to the uninhabited Marquesas for more reef trolling and beach lolling. And before things get too virtuous, we’ll throw in a night of folly at Key West. No cruise ship vibes here: this is flat-out seafaring adventure. See sailing trip here.

Grand Canyon

It may not be included in our new Centennial tours, but don’t think we’ve forgotten Arizona’s mighty Grand Canyon. No siree. Check out our range of US adventures that include an extended visit to America’s most famous natural wonder:
