Few places in the world blend lush tropical landscapes, exquisite beaches, multiculturalism and delicious food the way Malaysia does.
Cultural diversity might just be Malaysia’s top attraction. From street hawkers serving up a mouth-watering array of cuisines to UNESCO-protected towns where Hindu temples, Taoist pagodas and Malay mosques sit side-by-side, Malaysia’s diversity sets it apart from other South East Asian nations. While the country is most famous for its ancient rainforest and iconic Petronas Twin Towers, it also has some fantastic islands. Find the coral-fringed kind, perfect for snorkelling, off the coast of the north-east, and history-rich ones to the north-west.

Highlights of Malaysia

Discover why Langkawi is called the ‘Jewel of Kedah’
Remarkably laidback and unspoiled despite its popularity with travellers, the ‘Jewel of Kedah’ is an archipelago of 99 islands. Ancient rainforests and mangroves blanket much of the main island, where flying lemurs and loads of other wildlife reside. It also boasts gorgeous waterfalls and beautiful beaches, making it one of Malaysia’s most captivating islands.

Foodies rejoice in Penang’s historic old town
Nowhere sums up Malaysia’s ‘truly Asia’ tagline better than Penang, where colonial buildings, Chinese shophouses, mosques and temples line atmospheric streets in the UNESCO-protected capital of George Town. The street food is nothing short of legendary. Hawker stalls offering Malay, Chinese and Indian dishes are tucked into every nook and cranny. Start with some assam laksa soup and let the flavour safari begin.

Visit the sprawling Kek Lok Si Temple
Perched on a lush green hill on Penang Island, Kek Lok Si is not only Malaysia’s largest Buddhist temple, it’s one of its most impressive. The seven-tier Pagoda of 10,000 Buddhas is something of a symbol in Penang and symbolises harmony between Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism. Another highlight is the towering bronze statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy.
