Visit Cape Coast Castle
Perched on the headlands, it’s hard to imagine that the walls of this UNESCO World Heritage Site harbour such a harrowing history. Cape Coast Castle was one of the major departure points where millions of people sold into slavery were transported to the Americas. After a sobering tour of the dungeons where enslaved people were imprisoned for weeks, you’ll witness the stark contrast of the governor’s quarters with their huge ocean-view windows.
See West Africa’s tallest waterfall
After hiking through grassy plains, rainforests and cocoa farms in the lush Volta region, you’ll appreciate arriving at this tranquil oasis. Feel the cool spray on your skin as you gaze up at the dramatic Wli Falls (pronounced ‘vlee’) that plunge 80 meters over stratified rocks. It’s also a haven for wildlife with resident fruit bats, birds, butterflies and baboons.
Discover the world of fantasy coffins
Visit fantasy coffin makers in Accra to learn about the Ga people’s unique funeral customs. In Ga culture, it’s believed that the deceased will continue to live in the afterlife like they did on Earth, so coffins are designed to symbolise their profession, personality or hobbies. Ancestors are also believed to hold great power and honouring them with a grand coffin is a way to earn favour.
Walk through the treetops in Kakum National Park
Teeter along Kakum National Park’s famous canopy bridge, soaring 30 metres above the forest floor, while keeping an eye out for some of the 200 bird species that call the forest home. Once back on solid ground, wander beneath 300-year-old trees, learn about traditional medicinal plants or spot colobus monkeys swinging between the trees.
Eat your way around Nima
Get ready for a flavour-packed tour of multi-cultural Nima. Join a local guide at Nima Market where you’ll chat with friendly vendors, learn about fragrant spices indigenous to West Africa and sample street food favourites. But be sure to leave some room in your stomach, as you’ll then be invited into a local’s home to snack on traditional treats and hear stories about life here.
