Winter tours & holidays

Hibernating in winter? Not us.

There’s a certain kind of magic about a winter holiday. The crunchy snow, the smell of baked cinnamon and mulled wine, the cosy nights by candlelight. Or maybe it's the lucky moments on an Iceland trip when you look up and see the Northern Lights.

Whether it's a delicious grilled sausage at a Christmas market in Munich, snowboarding down fresh powder in New Zealand or trekking across Morocco's snow-dusted Atlas Mountains, winter travel has some pretty epic advantages. Plus, there are way fewer tourists, queues are tiny and your holiday selfies will feature just you and the view. We think a winter trip might be on the cards…

Why travel in winter

Smaller crowds

By travelling in an off-peak season, you’ll encounter shorter queues at major attractions and have more chances to mix with the locals. You’ll also alleviate some of the impact of high-season tourism on popular destinations and infuse some off-season support into the local community.

Value for money

Travelling in winter has many benefits, like cute puffer coats and big mugs of hot chocolate. But the benefits to your travel budget also shouldn’t be overlooked. Flights and travel experiences are often cheaper in off-peak seasons, meaning you can use your money to maximise your extras on the trip.

Real life experiences

Real life experiences are those moments when you know something special is happening. It could be whizzing across the snowfields of Finnish Lapland on the back of a dog sled, or floating through Venice's misty and (unusually) quiet canals. These unexpected moments are what travelling with us is all about.

Mount Toubkal Winter Trek

Christopher · Traveled April 2024
This is a remote strenuous trip up steep, boulder-covered slopes. You need to be 100% fit and healthy plus have checked all your equipment before going. Poles are a must even for younger treckers to be safe (I never use walking poles normally but needed them on the final day climb). The guides are excellent, strong and capable of dealing with people struggling which is a great plus that made me feel much safer. Several people either: - Did not make it to the top due to strength/altitude sickness and were escorted down; or - Struggled to come down and were helped down safely by the guides. The mountain refuge was much better than I expected with hot water, mini shop, clean toilets and good food. The guides also ensured the pace was kept very gentle and kept the group together so anyone reasonably fit could get to the top. I would certainly recommend having an extra few days in Marakesh in addition to this holiday. I am a very fit 64-year-old and made it to the top easily but my boots were not big enough making the return painful and two back toes to prove it. Overall, if you like strenuous hiking routes, this would be an excellent holiday to choose.

This was my first trip with Intrepid and I’ll definitely be doing another. The trip was well organised with just the right level of challenge. Our guide was excellent, looking after the needs of the whole group, as well as being friendly and informative.

Northern Lights Escape

Angela · Traveled March 2024
This dynamic trip was led by Larus who was a caring and engaged leader. He kept our group entertained with stories from the sagas and anecdotes about the historical, politic, geological and cultural aspects of his beloved Iceland. I’d go back to Iceland in a flash as it is an interesting and beautiful country with great food.
