Why do a cycling tour in The Americas? Because where else are you going share the road with a horse-riding cowboy, or cool off beneath a waterfall on the San Juan river? Where else can you wake up to stunning views over Utah’s red rock cliffs or haggle with Cuban cigar merchants? Where else will you dance the night away in some country bar then cycle out to see a pod of passing orcas? Cycling in The Americas isn’t just about the road. More than anywhere else, it’s about the colour and the diversity and the culture. It’s about kicking back with a glass of wine in Napa, taking a dip in the waters around Acadia National Park or riding through the same remote canyons that Butch Cassidy once rode. If you’re after a play-by-the-rules cycling tour, look elsewhere.Â

Our Americas cycling Top 5

Zion National Park, Utah
Definitely one for the cycling Bucket List. Often known for its amazing hiking, Zion is also one of the finest places in the USA to ride a bike. Enjoy a freewheeling descent through serpentine switchbacks that snake through steep-sided canyons, or climb the virtually car-free Floor of the Valley Road beneath the towering red rock cliffs past the megaliths such as the Mountain of the Sun, Mount Majestic, and The Great White Throne – this is Utah’s canyonlands at their finest. You can even swap your biking shoes for hiking shoes and trek one of those iconic hiking trails.

Napa Valley, California
Sometimes the best thing about cycling is when you stop, and that’s never been truer than in California’s stunning Napa Valley. The scenery along the way, through winding vineyards and distant hills, with the sun on your back and occasional cool Pacific Ocean breeze makes for serene cycling but the local produce – from legendary wines to the freshest California cuisine – really makes the effort worthwhile.

San Juan Island, Washington
For the cyclist San Juan Island has it all – a stunning lighthouse dotted coastline, a sea of lavender fields, quiet roads between delightful fishing villages and a little known yet fascinating piece of American history that you can cycle right through. It’s also known as one of the best places in the world to view whales without even putting your bike down! Coupled with relaxed island life and amazing cuisine this is a cyclist's paradise.

Acadia National Park, Maine
From the moment the sunrise touches your eyes at the same time it first touches American soil you’ll be enchanted by Acadia National Park. This is the best of America captured in 77 square miles – a stunningly rugged coastline, glacier-carved mountains, iconic viewpoints, fascinating wildlife and a culture all its own. And best of all it’s made for cycling, especially along the famed ‘carriage roads’ – John D Rockefeller Jr’s greatest gift to cyclists of all abilities.

Las Terrazas, Cuba
Havana might be the city that dominates Cuban travel brochures (those Cadillacs are pretty cool) but trust us, Las Terrazas is the place you’ll want to live out the rest of your natural days. A little eco-village dating back to the late 60s, today it’s an official UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. After a quick dip in the waterfalls of the San Juan River, we’ll ride into Las Terrazas and meet up with some local artists who have set up shop in a white-washed settlement overlooking the lake. There are open artists’ studios, woodwork and pottery workshops and some funky boutique galleries to check out. A nice break from your first big day in the saddle.
