Spring to life with a trip to the United States this April.
April showers bring stunning flowers across the United States, and while you may need an umbrella, there's nothing like watching the country bloom into a kaleidoscope of colour. In Washington DC, fluffy cherry blossoms turn the city into a cloud of pink, the Blue Ridge Mountains are alive with vivid wild azaleas, and if you're lucky enough, you might catch a super-bloom of desert gold in Joshua Tree. From hiking to city-hopping to just stopping to smell the roses, there's an activity for every US itinerary in April.

April United States highlights

Follow the Founding Fathers' footsteps in Boston
When you join a tour in Boston, you'll take a walk on the Freedom Trail, one of the city's most iconic sites. This brick trail meanders 2.5 mi (4 km) through the city, linking 16 historical sites from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Notable landmarks include Boston's oldest church, The Old North Church (best known for the midnight ride of Paul Revere and the “one if by land, two if by sea” lore), Paul Revere's house, Faneuil Hall, and the USS Constitution. After your tour, rest your feet and quench your thirst in one of Boston's many Irish pubs.

Hang with country music legends in Nashville
Music lovers unite! If you're a fan of legends like Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, and Waylon Jennings, a trip to Nashville isn't complete without a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame. A historical timeline will take you from the birth of country music to the present day, featuring one-of-a-kind props, audio, and never before seen photos of some of the greats. Taking part in a songwriting session, an instrument demo, or a film screening might just have you inspired enough to belt one out at an open mic night on Music Row to end your day.

Photograph iconic cherry blossoms in DC
For over 100 years, cherry trees gifted from Japan have been blossoming in Washington DC between the last week of March and the first week of April, and the blooms have become somewhat of a national treasure. While you can keep an eye on the fluffy pink trees from the live-streamed "bloom cam", there's nothing quite like seeing 'em in person. Take a bike ride along the Tidal Basin to get the best photos of the blooms from all angles.

Experience raging falls in Yosemite
Yosemite in April is a traveler's dream, especially with so many magnificent waterfalls on display. Peak runoff season is between April and May, and because California typically has a very dry summer, some waterfalls (even the mighty Yosemite Falls) may be reduced to a trickle by August. If you're planning on hiking through Yosemite in April, dress as if you're going out in the rain; sometimes the flow rate of these waterfalls can be so intense, you'll get a hearty shower as you pass by.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
It depends on where you’re from. Many countries now operate under the United States Visa Waiver Program, meaning a visa isn't required for stays of up to 90 days for travel purposes. There are 40 participating countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Spain.
If you are eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, you must obtain an authorization letter confirming you have been approved to travel. Authorization letters can be obtained by submitting an application through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, also known as ESTA. It takes roughly 20 minutes to apply, and you'll need to complete the application before you travel to the States.
Tipping is very much a part of the culture in the US. Tips are expected at restaurants, cafes, and diners, as well as by taxi drivers, valet attendants, porters, and hotel maids. People working in the service industry generally are generally paid a wage that is lower than the country's minimum wage and therefore rely upon tips as a major source of their income. In general, leave 15-20% of the bill at places serving food and a few dollars for hotel staff who provide a personal service like carrying bags or cleaning your room.
Internet access is excellent in the US, and internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots are easily found in most cities and major towns.
Major credit cards are widely accepted by stores in the US. Smaller cafes and shops may not accept credit cards, so ensure you carry enough cash to cover small purchases. If you need to withdraw cash, ATMs in major cities are abundant
You sure do. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their tour. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability, and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every trip.
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
