Weather in Luxembourg
Luxembourg is generally known to have a fairly continental climate that experiences cold winters and relatively mild-warm summers. However, Luxembourg's landscape varies from the north to the south and this can affect weather averages. The northern part of the country, referred to as Oesling (which includes the Ardennes), is slightly cooler and sees more rainfall than its southern counterpart, known as Gutland (which includes Luxembourg City). This rainfall amounts to around 1,000mm (40 inches) per year, and decreases as you journey into different parts of the country with the southwest experiencing around 900mm (35 inches) of rain and the southeast getting around 700mm (30 inches) of rain.
While rainfall is quite frequent and constant throughout the year, Luxembourg still enjoys warm temperatures and dry periods of time with the months of April to August experiencing the days with the most sunshine (averaging around 6/7 hours of sunshine per day). These summer months don't see many extreme temperatures, however, they have been more frequent in recent years due to the effects of global warming with July in 2019 and August in 2003 reaching temperatures of 39°C (102°F) and 38°C (100°F) respectively. But these extremely high temperatures are an anomaly with summer averages keeping steady at around 19°C (66°F) with a high of 24°C (75°F) or a low of 14°C (57°).
Does it snow in Luxembourg?
The winter weather in Luxembourg can get extremely cold with minimum temperatures averaging around -1°C (30°F). On days where temperatures are already at freezing levels, it can still feel colder due to the wind chill factor coming off the Atlantic Ocean. The coldest day in recent years was in February 2012 at a staggeringly low -15.5°C (5°F). Due to these cold conditions, it's very common for it to snow in Luxembourg during winter.
Snowfall can last for several weeks if temperatures remain at freezing levels and is most likely to occur in December (especially towards the end of the month). The snow is at its deepest in December making it the best month to enjoy snow-based activities such as skiing and snowboarding. Snowfall can still be expected in January and February (and even into April), however, it is less likely to remain on the ground for a long period of time.
If you don't mind the cold weather, Luxembourg under a blanket of snow is a sight that's guaranteed to stay with you long after you return home.
