Set off on a seven-day hiking adventure through Madeira’s dramatic coastlines, volcanic landscapes and lush forests. Hike renowned trails such as Vereda do Fanal, Pico do Ruivo, Levada do Norte and the scenic loop from Jardim do Mar through Vereda do Jardim and Levada da Calheta. Along the way, visit nearby villages like Santana (famous for its traditional thatched houses), as well as Prazeres and Seixal. Take a dip in volcanic rock pools, sip Madeira’s signature Ponch and visit a local rum distillery. Itinerary
Ola! Welcome to Funchal – the capital of Portugal’s Madeira archipelago, renowned for its scenic harbour, lush gardens and historic wine cellars. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive early, maybe visit the Gothic-Romanesque Cathedral, walk around the Sao Tiago Fortress, explore the local markets or enjoy some fresh seafood by the waterfront. After your welcome meeting, head out to optional dinner and get to know your group before hitting the trails tomorrow.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.
Today, you’ll set off on your first hike. Travel by private transport from Funchal to Estreito de Camara de Lobos. From here, embark on the Levada do Norte hike, taking in the ocean views as you walk towards Cabo Girao – one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe. When you arrive in Cabo Girao, perhaps relax with a picnic lunch. This afternoon, you’ll travel to Jardim do Mar for a leader-led orientation walk. Explore this peaceful town known for its traditional Madeiran lifestyle and lovely gardens. To end the day, enjoy a refreshing glass of Poncha (a local drink made from sugarcane rum, honey and lemon).

Your hiking time today will be approximately 3 hours or 7 km and total driving time up to 2 hours.
This morning, you’ll start in Paul do Mar with a steep climb along the historic PR19 Caminho Real. The stone staircase winds sharply uphill, quickly rewarding you with sweeping views over the Atlantic, rugged cliffs, and the village far below. At the top, continue into Prazeres and follow quiet roads before joining the Levada Nova path toward Estreito da Calheta. Here, the terrain levels out, and you’ll enjoy an easy walk through green farmland and terraces, with occasional coastal vistas along the way. After reaching Calheta, begin your descent toward Jardim do Mar on paved roads, taking in wide ocean views as you return to the coast. Once there, you might spend some time exploring this quiet seaside village, known for its dramatic setting and relaxed atmosphere.

Your hiking time today will be approximately 5.5 hours or 14.5 km.
Travel to the Fanal forest, where you’ll start today’s hike. Follow the Vereda do Fanal trail through ancient laurel trees and woodlands. After, travel to Seixal for a leader-led orientation walk through the village’s streets. Take some time to cool off with a swim in Seixal’s natural volcanic swimming pools before visiting the Miradouro de Veu da Noiva viewpoint, famous for its cliffside views and cascading waterfalls. Later today, travel to Santo António da Serra, where you’ll spend the night.

Your hiking time today will be approximately 4 hours or 10 km and total driving time up to 3 hours.
Your hike starts in Machico today – Madeira’s historic first capital, known for its harbours and beaches. Follow the scenic coastal trails to Porto da Cruz and take in the sweeping views of the town’s orange-roofed houses. After the hike, maybe visit the local rum distillery. Here, you can taste authentic Madeiran rum and learn about its production. Later today, set out on a walk through Santana – a rural village known for its traditional triangular houses called palheiros. Tonight, you’ll travel back to Santo Antonio da Serra, where you’ll spend the night.

Your hiking time today will be approximately 6 hours or 15 km and total driving time up to 1 hour.
This morning, you’ll travel to Achada do Teixeira – the gateway to Pico do Ruivo, the highest peak on Madeira. Hike along Vereda do Pico do Ruivo and take in the mountain views and rock formations (sometimes covered by clouds). After, maybe stop for lunch at a nearby cafe. This afternoon, set out on the Vereda da Ponta de Sao Lourenco hike, famous for its dramatic cliffs and coastal scenery. This trail showcases the island’s unique volcanic landscape and offers panoramic ocean views. Later today, head back to Santo Antonio da Serra for your last night and maybe go to dinner with your group to celebrate an epic trip.

- This trip involves plenty of walking over varied terrain and is best suited to travellers with a good level of mobility and fitness. Comfortable and sturdy walking shoes are a must, as well as hiking poles.
- Madeira offers year-round hiking, but weather conditions can vary depending on the time of year. Be sure to check the forecast before your trip and pack accordingly.
- The walks in the day-by-day itinerary are the area’s best pick, but your leaders may need to change them, depending on the track and weather conditions.

2. This trip ends on Day 7 after breakfast and you are free to leave at any time.

Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.
OCCASIONAL ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION
The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline. On rare occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our usual accommodation. A similar standard of accommodation will be used in these instances.
TWIN SHARE BASIS
Accommodation on this trip is on a twin basis. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. Please note there may be times where facilities will be shared rather than ensuite and rare occasions when you share a room with passengers travelling on different Intrepid trips than your own.
CHECK-IN TIME

From Madeira International Airport to Hotel Zarco B&B, you can take the Aerobus (SAM bus), which runs every 1–2 hours and takes about 30–40 minutes to reach Funchal city centre; get off at the stop near Avenida do Mar, just a 5-minute walk from the hotel. Buses run from around 07:00 to 23:00, with tickets available on board. Alternatively, you can take a taxi (approx. 20 minutes) or book a private transfer with our agent for a faster and more comfortable ride.
