April 2025

The Buffalo Ride encourages cyclists to raise money for low-income rural communities around the world

Intrepid Travel, a world leader in responsible travel, has launched its third annual Buffalo Ride, with an ambitious goal of raising AUD $100,000 for the global non-profit World Bicycle Relief. The challenge encourages cyclists of all abilities to join the fundraising efforts by taking a ride in the month of May 2025. Participants also have the chance to win a free Intrepid Cycling Tour, valued at AUD $3,500.

A partner of Intrepid Travel’s non-profit, The Intrepid Foundation, World Bicycle Relief supports individuals in rural communities around the globe to realise their goals by expanding opportunities to access education, markets, health facilities and vital services through the provision of bicycles. The Buffalo Bicycle was designed by World Bicycle Relief to serve the needs of people who travel long distances over rugged terrain with heavy cargo. It is a stronger, simpler, and sustainable bicycle that can withstand harsh rural conditions.

Biheng Zhang, General Manager of The Intrepid Foundation commented: "A simple bicycle can help to break down the barrier of distance, and by raising just $250 AUD you can provide an individual with the opportunity to access school, work or critical health care. Every day, Intrepid travellers explore some of the most incredible destinations around the globe on our cycling trips. Now is our chance to give back to the communities we visit, by opening doors for individuals in need, particularly women and girls, through life-changing bicycles.”

World Bicycle Relief has been a partner of The Intrepid Foundation for three years. In 2024, the company recruited 130 cyclists for its Buffalo Ride challenge, raising over AUD $66,000. This year, Intrepid will also be running a one-off fundraising cycle trip in Kenya in collaboration with World Bicycle Relief. Taking place from 29th May- 5th June 2025, this  eight-day cycling adventure will begin in Nairobi and journey through Kenya’s diverse landscapes, visiting local villages to see the impact of their fundraising efforts firsthand.

Maureen Kolenyo, Regional Director for East Africa at World Bicycle Relief commented: “The Buffalo Ride is a beautiful example of how bicycles can connect us across continents. Every kilometer cycled and every dollar raised brings us closer to a world where distance no longer stands in the way of opportunity. We’re grateful to partner with Intrepid and The Intrepid Foundation to help more students, health workers and entrepreneurs in rural communities thrive with the freedom and mobility a bicycle provides.”

Cyclists can choose to participate on their own throughout the month of May or join an Intrepid team event in their city, taking place on 4th May 2025. Intrepid team members from 11 cities will be participating in the challenge together.
