Nature, wildlife and wine await you in Margaret River
In Margaret River, known as 'Margs' to the locals, the ocean air feels fresher, the Cabernet Sauvignon tastes better and the beaches are next-level beautiful. Tick off one of Australia’s great walks — the Cape to Cape Track — where you’ll traverse rugged clifftops, explore soaring karri forests and maybe see dolphins or whales along the way. Or discover Western Australia’s best wineries, First Nations cultural experiences and natural sea spas on an action-packed road trip down to Albany.

Margaret River highlights

Raise a glass
What to do when in one of Australia’s top wine regions? Raise a glass, of course! From Cabernet Sauvignon to Chardonnay, Semillon to Sauvignon Blanc, the fertile soil and Mediterranean climate in Margaret River are ideal for growing many grape varieties. Hop between the cellar doors of local legends and boutique wineries to enjoy a glass (or two) overlooking the vineyards.

Indulge in delicious food
Margaret River is a mecca for foodies with some of the best cheese and chocolate factories Western Australia has to offer. After a day of adventuring, take your pick of restaurants in the town’s thriving foodie scene. With abundant local produce, the chefs here embrace the seasons and the paddock-to-plate ethos, and the menus are constantly changing.

Learn about Noongar culture
The Noongar people are the traditional owners of Margaret River, or Wooditchup. They have lived in the southwest region of Western Australia for over 45,000 years and have a long and continuing connection to this area. Meet a Noongar guide for a powerful cultural experience where you'll listen to stories of the land and go on a bushwalk to identify plants and foods used in traditional medicines.

Explore Boranup Karri Forest
Walk through the beautiful Boranup Karri Forest where ancient trees tower 60 metres above you. Walking here is a journey for all senses, with the minty smell of eucalypt, native wildflowers blanketing the forest floor and a soundtrack of native birds. Keep an eye out for golden whistlers, Purple-crowned lorikeets, and splendid fairywrens.

Listen to the didgeridoo in Ngilgi Cave
Experience a very special didgeridoo performance in Ngilgi Cave. This cave holds Noongar Creation stories and is highly sacred to the Noongar people. Venture into a chamber filled with stalactites and stalagmites and allow the hypnotic sounds of this ancient instrument to take you on a journey. Get ready for goosebumps.

Hike the Cape to Cape Track
Tackle one of Australia’s great walks and see some of the country’s most spellbinding scenery on the Cape to Cape Track. With two expert leaders by your side, you’ll traverse rugged clifftops and take in epic views of the Margaret River coastline (and maybe a pod of dolphins playing in the surf) while learning about the region’s rich history and biodiversity.

Our Margaret River trips begin in Perth. You can fly to Perth from over 30 international and domestic destinations.
From Perth, it’s a three-hour drive to Margaret River via the Kwinana Freeway/Forrest Highway. You can also take the inland route via the South Western Highway – it’s slower, but the drive is more scenic.
Western Australia is vast and remote, and public transport is limited. However, you could take a coach from Perth to Margaret River with South West Coach Lines via Busselton. There's also the Australind train with TransWA via Bunbury, which connects with a Westrail bus to Margaret River. Both options take about 5 hours.
The easiest way to get around Margaret River is by car or on a small group tour. The main township is compact and easy to walk around, but once you venture further, you'll have difficulty getting around without a car as public transport is limited.
Margaret River is beautiful all year round. However, if you want to make the most of the region’s wineries, hiking trails and beaches, consider visiting during summer (December-February). Late spring (October/November) and early autumn (March/April) are also great times to visit (especially for hiking) as the weather is pleasant and crowds are smaller.
Winter (June- August) could be an ideal time if you like the sound of rugging up with a glass of red around the fire, or walking along the wild and windswept Cape to Cape Track. June through August is also prime time for whale sightings.
Aim for comfy casual attire that you can layer up and down depending on the weather. Think t-shirts, shorts, sports leggings, light trousers, etc. You'll also need a waterproof jacket (and more warm layers if you visit in spring, autumn or winter).
The dress code in Margaret River is generally quite relaxed, but you might also want to bring a couple of smart-casual outfits for wineries and higher-end restaurants.
Margaret River is one of Australia’s biggest wine regions. It's home to over 200 vineyards and 90 cellar doors... grape times ahead!
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
