Frequently asked questions
Snowshoeing is one of the most rewarding ways to explore a polar environment because you'll be able to reach areas that are difficult to access on foot, take in panoramic views from higher vantage points and get a closer look at these incredible landscapes.
Your experience starts with an onboard snowshoeing workshop where you'll learn basic techniques. Once ashore, you'll join a small group, strap on your snowshoes and grab your poles and follow an experienced expedition guide through the powdery snow, stopping along the way to enjoy the scenery and photograph the surrounding landscapes. Snowshoeing excursions happen when the snow is at its thickest and softest.
Snowshoe outings typically last two to three hours and include Zodiac transfers.
No previous snowshoeing experience is required to participate but it’s generally recommended that you have an average level of fitness, as you’ll be walking for a couple of hours through the snow.
If you enjoy hiking trails and walking you will usually be fit enough to enjoy this activity.
Your snowshoe guides will help you get comfortable with the gear before setting off, so you can enjoy the experience even if it's your first time on snowshoes.
All essential equipment for your snowshoeing excursion is provided, including:
- Lightweight snowshoes
- Ski poles
- Safety equipment
What should I wear for polar snowshoeing?
You'll wear the same clothing you'd wear for a regular polar shore excursion, including:
- Warm layers
- Waterproof jacket and pants
- Gloves
- Sunglasses or goggles
- A small daypack
Polar conditions can change quickly, so dressing in layers will help you stay comfortable.
Our snowshoeing excursions are guided by our expert expedition team who have years of snowshoeing experience in polar regions.
We recommend you check that your insurance policy covers snowshoeing within a polar region when you book.
Snowshoeing is offered as an optional activity on many of our polar voyages when snow conditions are suitable. Availability depends on the terrain and weather conditions, so not every trip will necessarily offer the same opportunities.
Snowshoe outings are limited to a maximum of 30 travellers per group, allowing for a more personal experience with your guide. If you're interested in snowshoeing, it's best to prebook this activity when you book your trip.
