Getting around Wellington is quite easy as there are heaps of different transportation options to choose from including catching a bus, a train, a cable car, or a ferry. One of the best ways to take in as much as Wellington has to offer is by walking. The city center of Wellington is quite compact and most landmarks are within walking distance of each other. The terrain in central Wellington is also quite flat so it can be easily walked. 

One of the more popular and convenient ways of getting around is by using the public bus network. These buses run between 7 am and 11 pm and are very reliable and efficient.  

Catching a train around Wellington

Another way of getting around Wellington easily is by catching the train. There are five different train lines in Wellington to take travelers to their preferred destinations in varying regions. If you still need help getting closer to your destination, there are also buses available from the train stations to help with the rest of your journey. 

The trains in Wellington use paper-based tickets either as monthly passes, day passes, or 10-trip tickets as proof of your fare. These tickets can be valid for more than one zone and are available for purchase at train stations and ticketing agents. If you only require one ride, you can purchase single-trip tickets from participating outlets or with cash from onboard staff members. 

Renting a car in Wellington

You can rent a car from Wellington Airport with seven options available including Budget, Avis, Hertz, and Thrifty. You can also rent a car from several locations in central Wellington. Prices for renting a car can vary depending on the time of the year you're traveling in, what kind of car you need, and how long you need it for. Generally, renting a car in Wellington will cost anywhere between NZ$29 to NZ$55 per day.  

What's the traffic like in Wellington? 

The traffic in Wellington can be quite heavy at times, especially during peak hours as Wellington has a one-way road system that can be confusing to travelers. Despite this, navigating your way around the city streets is easy enough as there are clear signs and good infrastructure in place. 

While many people find it easier to walk around Wellington, there are a number of car parking options available including plenty of street parking.
