How to get to the Eyre Peninsula

The Eyre Peninsula is a triangular promontory flanked by the Gawler Ranges to the north, the Spencer Gulf to the east and the Great Australian Bight to the west. The easiest way to get there is via Adelaide.

There are daily flights to Adelaide from international and domestic destinations. You can also fly into regional airports in Ceduna, Port Lincoln or Whyalla.

The main townships in the Eyre Peninsula include Port Augusta, Ceduna, Port Lincoln, Whyalla and Coffin Bay.

Flying to Eyre Peninsula

Jetstar, Virgin Australia and Qantas fly direct to Adelaide from most major cities in Australia including Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. You can then hire a car and drive to Port Augusta, the region’s eastern entry point (about 3.5 hours). From here, you can continue on the inland route toward the Gawler Ranges, or take the coastal route via Whyalla.

You can also fly to one of the Eyre Peninsula’s few regional airports in Ceduna, Port Lincoln or Whyalla. Qantas and Rex operate daily services via Adelaide.

Public transport to Eyre Peninsula

From Adelaide, you can take a bus to Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Ceduna, Whyalla and Port Lincoln with Stateliner. However, once you arrive in these towns, you’ll need to hire a car as public transport is limited.

Driving to Eyre Peninsula

Self-driving or joining a tour is the best way to explore. The region is vast and remote, and there’s loads to see and do. We recommend at least nine days to do a loop from Port Augusta to Tumby Bay – anything shorter might feel rushed.

You don’t need a four-wheel drive as the main roads are fully sealed. However, you might want one if you’d like to visit more remote areas or unsealed routes in the Gawler Ranges or Coffin Bay National Park.
