You can snack your way through Kuromon Market’s maze of 100 stalls, dive into the eclectic Dotonbori district for restaurants, bars and shopping, or mix things up beyond the food scene. Like daytrips to Nara Park to see its sacred deer, check out the retro vibes in Shinsekai, or stroll in the gardens of Osaka Castle. Even one of Osaka’s signature dishes, okonomiyaki, comes from the phrase ‘to your liking’ – which couldn't be more on brand for a trip like this.

Japan’s answer to fast food is kaiten-zushi – conveyor belt sushi, which was actually invented right here in Osaka. Sit back and relax as plates of sushi circulate on a conveyor belt that goes around the restaurant and grab what you like. The plates are colour-coded to determine pricing, so just snatch up what looks good and enjoy.

Arguably one of Japan’s most dramatic historical monuments, Osaka Castle is a sight to see with its huge stone walls, moat surroundings and nature-inspired designs. You can stroll through its impressive 260-acre gardens, which burst into bloom with cherry blossoms in the spring and cast a gold backdrop in autumn.

If you’re heading to Dotonbori, come hungry. The district is famous for shopping, entertainment, night life and big neon signs, but also for its street food. Roam around, grab some takoyaki (octopus dumplings) and kushikatsu (skewered, deep fried meat and veggies) and eat until you drop.
