Off the beaten path thrills with an old-world backdrop…

Europe is more than just the famous stuff you read about in guidebooks. It's about pedalling past timeworn farms in Slovenia's Julian Alps, kayaking over a Byzantine metropolis in the Turkish Mediterranean and hiking to a 17th-century mountain castle fueled by homemade Dalmatian brandy in the belly. Even the glacier views from Switzerland's Bernina Express train seem thick with legend. We're all about finding those epic adventures that your friends back home haven't experienced... let alone heard of. Ready? Let's do it.

Highlights of Europe

Hiker in the Pyrenees

Hike in the pristine Pyrenees Mountains

For a tiny, landlocked country, Andorra offers a serious bounty of summer fun. Delve into the pristine Pyrenees Mountains and walk along a single track through forested slopes, where the scenery shifts from pine forest plants and rhododendrons in June, wild fruit in in midsummer, and mushrooms in September. Watch for thickset mountain horses grazing on the high slopes. Ascend to the Cabana Sorda Lake for lunch, which sits below an impressive amphitheatre; from there hardcore hikers can continue to the peak – sitting at around 2,600 metres – and be rewarded by bird’s eye views of the valley.

Travellers whitewater rafting in Spain

Raft world-class whitewater rapids in Catalonia

The town of Sort, in Spain, translates to ‘good luck’ in Catalan, but you won’t need much of that when rafting around here. The local waterways are rated in the top five in the world, for their optimal combination of safety and enjoyability. And the best bit is, they’re just a hop, skip and jump across the border from our adventure base in Andorra. Take a detour from the hiking and biking and enjoy 14 kilometres (9 miles) stretch of exhilarating whitewater rapids. You’re in good hands with local guides, and, crucially, there’s a bar at rafting HQ for a well-earned tipple afterwards.

Paklenica National Park

Cycle the beech and black pine forests of Croatia

The rocky landscapes of Dalmatia were made for two-wheeled touring, and this stuff calls for some knobby tyres. Jump into the saddle of a mountain bike, click on those suspension forks and hit the forests of Paklenica National Park. Just don’t let those views of serrated Velebit mountain peaks distract you too much – or the eagles, deer and bears. This is a land of untouched nature, eclectic wildlife, and zillions (OK, definitely thousands) of plant species, many of them endemic. Historic stone villages one minute and Adriatic Sea views the next… this is not your average MTB adventure.

Kayaking at Amalfi Coast

Kayak along the picture-perfect Amalfi Coast

The beauty of Italy’s Amalfi Coast really comes alive when seen from the water. The walking trails linking the tiny villages, such as the famous Footpath of the Gods, are an absolute must; but kayaking is the way to go to soak up the postcard views of those colourful clusters of houses built into those much-photographed hills by the sea. The excursion ends up in the quaint little beach Santacroce, a secluded hundred-metre long strip of rugged Amalfi perfection. It’s the perfect spot for an afternoon aperitivo before the return paddle begins.
