Freycinet National Park is located on the East Coast of Tasmania (or “Tassie” as it’s warmly called by Australians). If you’re travelling from mainland Australia or overseas, you’ll either need to fly or sail to Tasmania and transfer to Freycinet via car, bus or private tour.

If you’re not travelling to Freycinet as part of a tour, you’ll need to buy a park pass with Tasmania Parks & Wildlife Services. A daily pass costs $40 per vehicle (carrying up to 8 people) or $20 per person. You can also purchase a holiday pass for $80 (valid for up to two months) or $40 per person which is better value if you're travelling to multiple national parks on your trip.

By air

The most convenient airports to fly to are Hobart and Launceston. You can fly into several other airports such as Devonport, but Hobart and Launceston are the biggest and offer more flight routes and more frequent flight schedules. There are daily flights to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra and several other destinations in Australia. There is no public pub from

You can travel to Devonport in northern Tasmania by boat on Spirit of Tasmania from Port Melbourne. The crossing takes about 11 hours and you can travel either as a foot passenger or with your car, caravan or motorhome. The drive from Devonport to Freycinet takes about 3 hours.

There is a good public transport system in Hobart and other cities and towns, but it’s limited in more remote parts of Tassie. However, if you’re not driving you’ll be happy to know you can jump on a public bus to Freycinet from several destinations in Tassie. The main routes are:

  • Coles Bay/Bicheno to Launceston via St Marys
  • Coles Bay/Bicheno to St Marys and St Helens

How to get around Freycinet

The easiest way to get around Freycinet is by car or private tour bus. Although you can reach many of Freycinet’s top spots on the walking tracks, you’ll still need transport to travel to various attractions, beaches, walking tracks and coastal towns dotted in and around the peninsula. If you're feeling active, you could always hire a bicycle to get around on two wheels.
