Turkmenistan highlights
Look into a fiery gate to hell
If you didn’t know it existed, stumbling across the Darvaza Gas Crater may come as quite a shock. In 1971, oil drillers found their site had collapsed and decided to burn off any residual gas. But surprisingly, the fires never went out and they continue to light up this 70m hole in the Karakum Desert and aptly earned its ‘Gates to Hell’ nickname.
Walk the city of monuments
Journey from the ancient walls of Nisa to the golden accents of the Neutrality Arch, imposing Memorial Complex and Independence Monument as you learn about Turkmenistan's history from your local leader. Nicknamed the ‘City of White Marble,’ Ashgabat showcases the nation's historic events, leaders and tragedies on a truly grand scale.
