Why you'll love this trip

  • With relaxed days and lots of free time to explore on your own, this tour is the perfect mix of local leader expertise and go-at-your-own-pace travel.

  • Fraser Island is a World Heritage site and, with expert guidance from your leader and a couple nights in a protected campground, you’ll get to experience all the highlights while still only leaving a delicate footprint.

  • Spend your days wandering amid a tropical paradise tucked within sand dunes and swimming in some of the purest water on the planet, then unwind in the evenings at your beachside campground and hostel accommodations.

  • Take a dip in the bubbling Champagne Pools, so named for their unique formation along the ocean’s edge, where incoming waves create fizzy seafoam – one of the most unique natural attractions on Fraser Island.

  • With ferry and 4WD transportation included and arranged for you, you’re free to sit back, relax and leave all the logistics to your leader.

Is this trip right for you?

  • Just as a heads up before you book: this trip is new to our range this year. And while we have thoroughly researched every detail of the logistics, new destinations can sometimes throw us some unexpected surprises. More often than not, it’ll be a great surprise. But every now and again there might be a hiccup. We like to think that’s what puts the ‘adventure’ in ‘adventure travel’.

  • Come prepared to be flexible with your days and ready for an adventure! Daily itineraries may be changed due to tides and weather conditions to ensure you maximise your time on Fraser Island.

  • Accommodation is in no frills, simple hostels and campgrounds, perfect for travellers on a budget. This is a participatory trip – a fancy way of saying you’re not just along for the ride, but you are part of a team! Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and help out with camp activities like food prep and washing up. It’s all about giving your new travel mates a hand, and everyone knows there’s nothing worse than trying to put up a tent on your own!

Itinerary

Welcome to the Sunshine Coast! Today is a free day before your 4pm group meeting, so feel free to arrive into Rainbow Beach at your leisure – we can arrange for airport pick-up if you need. If your travels have you arriving early in the day, take the time to explore this delightful coastal town. Wander the main street or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, head out to Carlo Sandblow, a unique sand mass that feels a bit like you’ve landed on the moon. After your group meeting this evening, you may want to head out with your travel mates for a dinner of locally caught seafood or maybe a beer at the local surf club.

Special Information
It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.
It’s a short 10-minute drive to the ferry that will transport you across the water to the stunning Fraser Island (a 10-minute crossing). Once you’ve arrived on the world’s largest sand island, take a 4WD drive along 75 Mile Beach – Fraser Island’s own “highway” complete with speed limits. Enjoy morning tea on the beach before your adventure really begins, with a drive to the famous Lake McKenzie, one of the most popular and picturesque highlights of Fraser. Stop for lunch here, with some free time to relax on the white sand beach or swim in the lake’s amazingly clear waters. Fun fact: because Lake McKenzie sits above the water table, it is comprised entirely of rainwater and is too pure for the typical plants and fish you’d find in most lakes. Head onwards to the ancient rainforest-surrounded Central Station, Wanggoolba Creek and Pile Valley before driving up to your campground accommodation. Settle in for an early dinner and some well-deserved drinks.
