Best time to visit Denali National Park
The best time to visit Denali National Park is in summer, from June to August when there is full access to the park, the days are warm and there's an insane amount of daylight hours. While Denali does technically experience four seasons, it's more like two: summer and winter, which lasts from the end of September to April. The summer months may be the best time to adventure through Alaska and its many national parks, but there are still perks to visiting any time of the year. Let's talk about it.

Visiting Denali throughout the year
Peak season (June-August)
If you want to get the most out of Denali, this is your time to shine. With the longest amount of daylight hours, fully open visitor facilities and wildflowers blooming, summer is a hard season to beat. Around the solstice in June, Denali sees up to 22 hours of sunlight! Summer is also the best time for photography, when hillsides and meadows are lush green, wildflowers bloom into July and wildlife activity is at its peak.
Early season (May)
If you can't make it to the park in summer or want to visit when there are fewer crowds, May is the best time to go. Snow may still linger, but as the temperature starts to warm up, the wildlife start to wake up. Park activities and public transport open up in mid-May, but a lot of the park and it's worth a visit for the birthing season, where you might be lucky enough to spot moose and caribous calves, Dall lambs, bear cups or wolf pups (so cute!).
Shoulder season (September)
Another great time for cool temperatures and fewer visitors is autumn, when the park is covered in brilliant shades of red, orange and yellow from seasonal foliage – another good option for photographers! Days start getting chillier and shorter, but your chances of seeing the northern lights increase. There are some seasonal closures, but the brunt of that happens in October.
Winter (October to April)
While we may not offer trips to Denali in winter, it's a unique experience with opportunities to go snowshoeing, skiing or see the sled dogs prowling the park with the rangers. The main visitor services, shuttle busses, and interior park roads shut down for the winter mid-September, with deep winter conditions locking down facilities from October to April. December sees roughly 5.5 hours of sunlight, so this is the best time to (hopefully) see the northern lights.
