Depending on the trip you choose, the train route usually means more time in Cusco while the other travellers in your group start their trek. As a UNESCO-listed city and former capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco is packed with culture, history and mouth-watering food, so take your time wandering its cobbled streets and snacking your way through the markets.
From Cusco, it's a 2-hour drive to Ollantaytambo, followed by a 90-minute train through the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes. From there, you can catch a 30-minute bus to Machu Picchu – or if you have energy to burn, hike the steep 1.5-hour stone path to the top.
A local guide will then meet you at the entrance for a 1.5-hour tour and bring the ruins to life.
