A grazing plate brunch in Margaret River

Indulge in delicious food

Margaret River is a mecca for foodies. From artisan cheesemakers and craft beer connoisseurs to luxury chocolatiers and local farmers with the freshest produce in town. It’s also brimming with award-winning chefs who live by the paddock to plate motto. Get amongst Margs’ thriving brunch scene, grab a gourmet picnic hamper, go casual with tapas and cocktails, wine and dine in style, or do it all – why (or should we say ‘wine’) not.

A Noongar bush medicine plant from Margaret River

Learn about Noongar First Nations culture

The Traditional Owners of Margaret River (known as Wooditchup) are the Wadandi Noongar people. The Noongar have lived in the southwest of Western Australia for about 45,000 years and continue to have a strong connection to country. Meet with a local guide who will teach you about the rich Noongar culture, listen to stories passed down from Elders and go on a bushwalk to identify plants and foods that are used in traditional medicines.

Karri trees in Boranup Karri Forest

Stand under giant karri trees in Boranup Karri Forest

Take a walk through the beautiful Boranup Karri Forest (just south of Margs) and see the giant karri trees towering 60m above you. Let the sweet smell of eucalyptus waft through your nostrils and admire the native wildflowers scattered around the forest floor. For an extra special experience go during golden hour to see the sunlight beam through the trees and make everything look even more magical.

Ngilgi Cave in Margaret River

Listen to a didgeridoo performance in Ngilgi Cave

Ngilgi Cave is home to powerful Dreamtime stories for the Noongar people. Discover a labyrinth of underground chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, helictites and stunning calcite crystals. The best part of this experience is listening to a mesmerising didgeridoo performance deep inside the cave and feeling your arms get all goosebumpy as the sound bounces off the walls.

Rugged coastline on the Cape to Cape Track in Margaret River

Hike the stunning Cape to Cape Track

With 123-kilometres of rugged headlands, six million-year-old cliffs, gorgeous beaches and crystal clear waters – this is the West Coast at its best. Enjoy vast clifftop views, pass through enchanting woodlands, discover secluded bays and cool down in natural sea spas. If you're lucky you might even spot a pod of humpbacks or dolphins in the surf.

The easiest way to get to Margaret River is via Perth. It’s three hours from Perth by car and the route is fairly straightforward. You can take the Kwinana Freeway out of Perth which eventually leads onto the Forrest Highway. From here, follow the directions to Bunbury, Busselton and then Margaret River. You can also take the South Western Freeway inland – it’s slower but the drive is a bit more scenic.

If you don’t fancy driving, you can take a coach from Perth to Margaret River with South West Coach Lines via Busselton or with TransWA via Bunbury.

If you’re coming from further afield you can fly into Busselton Airport (50km north of Margaret River). Flights are limited though, with only a few scheduled flights per week from Perth.

The easiest way to get around Margaret River is by car or with a private tour group. Apart from the coaches in and out of the Margaret River Region, there is no public transport. The main township is compact and easy to walk around, but it's difficult to travel around to the wineries, beaches and other attractions if you don’t have a car.

Margaret River is beautiful all year round. However, if you really want to make the most of the region’s wineries, hiking trails and beaches, the summer (December to February) is where it’s at. The average daytime high is a nice 30°C, the weather is great for long beach days and the mild evenings are perfect for alfresco dining. The shoulder season (late spring and early autumn) is also a great time to visit as you get most of the perks of summer with smaller crowds. Winter days experience a mild high of 16-18°C and the region's highest annual rainfall, but clear and crisp days are really beautiful, especially along the Cape to Cape Track.

There isn't a one-size-fits-all packing list for Margaret River, so our advice is to consider the season and the activities you’d like to do. Aim for ‘comfy casual’ and you can’t go too wrong.

You can get away with light clothing for most of the year such as t-shirts, shorts and light trousers or dresses, plus a jacket to wear when it gets cooler in the evening. It’s best to bring warm layers during winter. It never gets really cold, but you'll want to rug up of an evening or if you’re out walking on the windy coast. It’s a good idea to bring a wind-breaking outer layer to keep you warm.

You might also want to bring some smart/casual clothes if you’re heading to higher-end restaurants or wineries, as some of them have a ‘no thongs or shorts’ dress code.

Margaret River is one of Australia’s biggest wine regions. If you're a wine lover, you'll be happy to hear there are over 200 vineyards and more than 90 cellar doors... grape times!

Margaret River may be known as one of Australia's best wine regions but it also plays host to plenty of other fun-filled events. Here are some of our favourites:

  • Margaret River Readers and Writers Festival
  • Magaret River Pro
  • Margaret River Farmers Markets
  • Festival of Busselton
  • Karnidale Circus Festival
  • Beerfest
