See Sri Lanka through the eyes of local women and share their culture, cuisine and traditions

Hike a stage of the Pekoe Trail with guides who grew up in the communities along the trail and are now carving their path in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Spend a free morning either relaxing or exploring at your own pace. Later today, you’ll take part in a cultural evening where you’ll meet local women and experience Jaffna’s rich culture and traditions. First, learn how to drape a saree and make a flower garland, then visit a local kovil (Hindu temple) to try out some traditional Bharatanatyam dance steps. You’ll have a typical Jaffna-style home-cooked dinner. Jaffna cuisine has been shaped by the region’s Tamil heritage, its dry climate and the ingredients available here in the north. While it shares many key ingredients with broader Sri Lankan cuisine, Jaffna cuisine is known for its unique use of spices, which are often dry roasted before being ground into rich, aromatic blends, giving Jaffna curries their distinctive depth and flavour. Ingredients like palmyrah, seafood and brinjal (eggplant) also play an important role in northern Sri Lankan cooking and might appear in this evening's meal.

Flights to and from trip
Flights to and from the trip need to be booked separately from your trip, but if you'd like, we can help arrange them for you.
Request a flight quote when you book or contact us to talk through options.
When you travel with us, The Intrepid Foundation gives you more opportunities to support important causes in destinations you visit.
Before you book you should know
- The motorbike tour of Jaffna has been carefully assessed to meet our strict safety standards (helmets are provided and mandatory). To join the tour, your travel insurance must cover riding as a passenger on a motorbike of up to 125cc.
- We visit a number of temples on this trip, which requires a certain level of modesty. Please bring clothes that cover the arms and pants/skirts that go past the knees. Some temples on this trip require your head to be uncovered when visiting. A light scarf is also a good idea for covering shoulders and arms when it’s hot.
- Though its equatorial position means fairly constant year-round temperatures, the summer months in Sri Lanka are very hot with short, sharp monsoons in the south-west of the country. Be sure to use adequate sun protection and drink plenty of water.
- The Rock Fortress – or Lion Rock – of Sigiriya is spectacular. However, those with a fear of (or even an aversion to) heights may wish to sit the excursion out. Scaling the rock involves walking up lots of rough, narrow steps and tight walkways.
- Jaffna has opened to tourism after being off-limits to visitors for the past 30 years, meaning it’s quieter, less developed and services and accommodation are not yet quite up to the same standard as the rest of the country.
1. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.
2. A complimentary airport arrival transfer is included; valid if you are arriving on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-tour accommodation through us. You must provide your flight details to your booking agent at least 14 days prior to travel.
3. The Perahera Festival is a 10-day period of evening processions to honour the Sacred Tooth, which is enshrined at Kandy's Temple of the Tooth. Each night features thousands of perfomers, including dancers, drummers, and a parade of more than 50 decorated elephants. Due to Intrepid's stance on elephant cruelty we do not visit the Perahera Festival and cannot purchase tickets on your behalf.
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a third-party. The "Add connection" feature shows transit visa requirements only and does not include full entry visa needs. Please note, additional service fees apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa.
