Monaco basks in all that’s good about the Mediterranean. Hot summers are tempered by cool sea breezes and winters rarely get too cold. Plus you can enjoy sparkling sunshine year round with an average of only 60 rain days.
Geography and environment
Set on a small, but hilly ribbon of coast in France, Monaco is Europe’s second smallest independent state (after the Vatican). Beautiful buildings and perfect streets clamber up the hillside and down along the coast in a natural amphitheater - it’s as if Monaco’s natural beauty is on show. Italy is just a few kilometres away.

1. Putting it all on red
Put on your best Bond-esque outfit and head to the Casino de Monte-Carlo. Order a martini, hover at the tables and rub shoulders with the jetset.
2. Play at Royalty
Monaco’s 13th-century palace has been home to the Grimaldis for seven centuries. In between peaking at the throne room and watching the changing of the guard, keep an eye out for one of the resident princes or princesses.
3. Shop the Golden Circle
Do a spot of (window) shopping in Monte Carlo’s Golden Circle. This is where the big brands live and you’ll be surrounded by Chanel, Louis Vuitton and shoppers who arrive by Ferrari.
4. Café de Paris
This is a café where even the toilets are worth a photo. Stop by for a café au lait and see how the other half live.
5. Jardin Exotique
Even if prickly pears and cacti aren’t your cup of tea, the million-dollar views from these exotic gardens are something to write home about. While there, head underground to explore Monaco’s prehistoric cave network.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. It's important to understand that each country you visit may have its own specific entry requirements, and some destinations mandate travel health insurance for all foreign travellers, regardless of their nationality.
Your leader will record your travel insurance details on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is an essential part of every journey.
Restaurants will include a service fee within the bill; however, tipping extra (while not absolutely necessary) is customary and will be appreciated by wait staff. Usually rounding up the bill or leaving spare change is sufficient. Feel free to tip more if the service has been exemplary or if you’re feeling generous.
Internet access is excellent in Monaco. Internet cafes can be found everywhere.
Monaco has excellent mobile phone coverage. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your carrier if you wish to use your phone.
Monaco has western-style flushable toilets. Keep loose change handy to pay for public toilets.
