Do you need a visa for Luxembourg? Â
Passport holders from over 150 countries will need to obtain a Schengen visa before travelling to Luxembourg, however, there are also 90 countries whose passport holders do not need a visa before entering the country, only a valid passport and an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) travel authorisation.
Passport holders from the below countries are not required to obtain a travel visa before entering Luxembourg:Â
- Australia
- New Zealand
- United Kingdom
- Ireland
- Japan
- United States
- CanadaÂ
- Brazil
For the full list of countries that do and do not require a visa to travel to Luxembourg, please visit the Online Visa Global Travel Services website.Â
Luxembourg is also a member of the Schengen Area, meaning there are different travel requirements and exemptions for nationals travelling from any one of the 25 fellow Schengen countries. Nationals from countries who are a part of the Schengen Area, and who are travelling to a fellow Schengen country, do not need a passport to travel and can stay for an unlimited time. You can find the full list of Schengen countries here.Â
Please note that obtaining a Schengen visa does not automatically mean you'll be allowed to enter Luxembourg. Upon your arrival, you still have to clear immigration with immigration officials the only ones that can grant access into the country. This also applies to nationals that don't require visas to enter Luxembourg.Â
How to apply for a Luxembourg visaÂ
If you require a visa (known as an embassy or Schengen visa), you will need to apply for it by visiting an embassy, government office, or consulate of Luxembourg well in advance before your attended arrival in Luxembourg. It can take up to 15 days for the application process to be completed, however, this period of time may vary in some circumstances and it's not uncommon for some visas to take up to 30 or even 60 days to be completed.Â
The cost of the visa can also vary but you can expect to pay around USD$85 for a single-entry stay valid for up to 90 days for a continued or interrupted period. For more detailed information regarding visa requirements, please visit your nearest embassy or consulate.Â
How to apply for an ETIAS travel authorisationÂ
It's very simple to obtain an ETIAS online visa waiver. You simply have to fill out an online form with your basic personal, passport, and travel information, as well as respond to some basic security questions before submitting your application. Once you've filled out your information, you'll be prompted to choose your preferred method of payment for the total of USD$7 (the application fee).Â
Once your application's been approved (this should be almost instant), it will automatically be linked electronically to your passport and allows travellers to stay in Luxembourg for up to 90 days (you will be notified of approval via confirmation email). You should still print out a copy of your approved application though, in case there are any issues with the electronic system upon your arrival in Luxembourg. This visa is valid for 3 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.Â
To start your application, please visit the ETIAS Visa website.Â
