Getting around Brisbane is relatively easy as most landmarks and attractions in the Central Business District (CBD) are within walking distance of each other. If walking isn't really your thing but you still like the idea of being active, you could also take advantage of the city's excellent cycling trails and a public bike hire scheme.

If you want to travel outside of the city centre, there are several options available including public transport, hiring a car and rideshare.

Cycling in Brisbane

Brisbane has an extensive network of bikeways and shared pathways. Cycling is a great way to explore the city as you can take in the sights and stop when you feel like it. The city is also quite flat which makes for easier riding.

There are roughly 2800 Neuron and Beam e-bikes and scooters dotted across the city. Simply download the app, register your details and you're good to go. And don't forget to wear your helmet — it's mandatory.

The UV Index is strong in Queensland, so top up your sunscreen regularly when cycling (even if the sun isn't shining).

Public transport in Brisbane

Brisbane has a good public transport network operated by TransLink. You can buy a TransLink go card which gives you access to train, bus, ferry and tram services (excluding Airtrain) across south-east Queensland. You can purchase a card online, at a Queensland rail station, or at a 7-Eleven or Night Owl store.

If you're travelling around the CBD, you can enjoy free travel on the City Loop, Spring Hill Loop and South Brisbane Loop bus services. Buses run every 10 minutes between 7am to 6pm (or 9pm for some services) on weekdays.

There's also a free CityHopper ferry service from North Quay to Sydney Street in New Farm.

Car rental in Brisbane

There are six car rental companies at Brisbane Airport: Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Thrifty, Europcar and Hertz. Rental prices vary, but you can expect to pay from AUD $46 per day.

Brisbane's streets are fairly easy to drive and parking is available in the city centre. If you do hire a car, it gives you the opportunity to explore Brisbane's surrounding regions including a visit to Fraser Island or the Gold Coast.
