When is the best time to visit Luxembourg?
Luxembourg is a breathtaking country that can be enjoyed year-round regardless of the weather but the months of June, July, and August are generally considered the best time to visit this magical and historical destination. Although the country's weather stays fairly consistent in terms of expected rainfall and sunshine hours throughout the year, it's summer's mild to warm temperatures and plenty of cultural events that make it the best, and most popular, time to travel.
Winter in Luxembourg
Best for: snow activities, eating at fine dining restaurants, and Christmas markets.
While temperatures can reach an eye-watering -1°C, winter is still a great time to visit Luxembourg as there are fewer crowds and still plenty of fun-filled activities to participate in. Both cities and landscapes become more magical in winter with snow dusting rooftops and sprawling fields from December through to February.
Christmas markets and twinkling lights also start making an appearance in mid-December in preparation for the festive season and the much-beloved Winter Lights Festival in Luxembourg City begins in November and runs through January. This festival is full of street entertainment, shows, concerts, and fascinating exhibitions and only adds to the fairytale-like atmosphere found in most major cities across the country at this time of year.
Spring in Luxembourg
Best for: wandering museums, exploring the great outdoors, and Buergbrennan (bonfire festival)
Spring is also a great time to travel to Luxembourg as the temperatures aren't as warm as they are in summer but are still high enough to enjoy spending long periods of time outside comfortably. While it can rain frequently in spring, it also means that landscapes are lusciously green and blooming with flowers so prepare to fill up your camera roll with colourful photos.
Crowds have also not reached summer numbers yet so you'll have popular tourist attractions such as castles and museums mostly to yourself, although Beurgbrennan (celebrated in all major cities across Luxembourg) draws thousands of travellers to the country every year. The Buergbrennan festival involves a massive bonfire to see off winter and welcome spring with villages enjoying a feast of sausages, pea soup, and beer prior to the events.
Summer in Luxembourg
Best for: enjoying festivals such as the Fête de la Musique, hiking, and visiting the lake in Upper-Sûre National Park
As summer is considered the best time to visit Luxembourg, crowds are out in full force so you can expect longer lines and increased accommodation and attraction prices. Due to the warm temperatures and longer sunlight hours in the months of June, July, and August, popular activities include hiking the country's most breathtaking mountains (think the Mullerthal Trail, Sandstone Cliffs, and Felsenweg) and swimming, canoeing, and sailing in Upper-Sûre National Park's famous lake.
If you're travelling in June and happen to be in Luxembourg during the national holiday for the Grand Duke's birthday (June 24th), you'll be treated to several celebrations including military shows, street processions, musical performances, and fireworks.
Autumn in Luxembourg
Best for: wine/harvest festivals, exploring castles, and beer tasting.
Although temperatures are starting to get cooler, Autumn is a spectacular time to visit Luxembourg as the once luscious landscapes give way to fields, forests, and gardens full of orange and red-leafed trees. The crowds of Summer have gone, however, the wine and harvest festivals organised throughout the season can draw large crowds so make sure you book your accommodation well in advance to avoid missing out.
For the most part though, popular attractions, and even major cities, are moderately quiet. To go with the cozy and often gloomy weather, exploring historic and medieval castles is one of the most popular things to do during this time, as well as wandering through markets and going beer tasting.
