Is Luxembourg LGBTQIA+ friendly?Â
While Luxembourg has always, and still continues to be, traditionally Catholic, there have been major developments in the inclusion and celebration of the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual) community in recent years with the country's own Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, marrying his same-sex partner after a bill was passed to legalise same-sex marriage in January 2015. Becoming the first serving leader in the European Union to wed their same-sex partner, Luxembourg sets an example for fellow European Union countries in their bid for both equality and legal protection for LGBTQIA+ nationals.Â
Initially, it was feared there would be major backlash following the Prime Minister's nuptials among the religious population, however, the majority of Luxembourgains weren't fussed at the news, instead, they celebrated their leader for his courage and congratulated him on his marriage. While the country still holds traditionally conservative beliefs, it is, as a whole, becoming more and more socially progressive making Luxembourg suitable for travellers of the LGBTQIA+ community.Â
Public displays of affection between same-sex couples are widely accepted within major cities such as Luxembourg City and Esch-Sur-Alzette, however, discretion is advised for those travelling to more remote and conservative regions.Â
Queer culture in Luxembourg
We know that great strides have been taken on a government level to achieve equality and the freedom to love for the LGBTQIA+ community, and Luxembourg's social scene has followed suit with queer culture not specifically present. That doesn't mean LGBTQIA+ people aren't tolerated, rather that both the heterosexual culture and queer culture In Luxembourg are perfectly integrated together so much so that you can't distinguish one from the other.Â
However, there are a few gay bars and clubs to explore in Luxembourg (we're looking at you WOOF Luxembourg), as well as an annual pride festival (usually occurring in June)Â full of parades, parties, panel discussions, and movie nights to enjoy.Â
Solo travel and room sharing
At Intrepid, we want you to feel comfortable and welcomed whenever you book a trip with us, whether that's in Luxembourg or somewhere else in the world. If you're a solo traveller, we'll automatically pair you with a fellow solo traveller of the same gender according to your passport information for all accommodation purposes. If you're not comfortable with this and would prefer a different rooming arrangement, please advise us at the beginning of the booking process. If you'd rather have a room to yourself, individual rooms may be available on some tours.Â
