Highlights of our Montana toursÂ

Visit Glacier National Park
They don’t call Glacier National Park the ‘Crown of the Continent’ for nothing, and it’s because of its impressive landscapes and breathtaking scenery that adventure-seekers flock to its snow-capped mountain ranges. The best part? You get to explore the park in vintage 1930s style aboard a bus with a roll-back top and settle down for a picnic lunch among the trees.Â

Raft down Flathead River
Guaranteed to be an epic experience, take your Montana adventure to the next level by joining your group on an expert-led white water rafting activity down Flathead River. Soak up the beauty of your scenic surroundings and listen to the call of the wilderness as you’re having the time of your life with your newly found friends. Exhilarating? Yes. Unforgettable? Also, yes.Â

Learn about Native American history
From guided hikes in First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park to a visit to the Charles Russell art museum, our Montana tours are jam-packed with opportunities to learn about the history of this state’s Native American population. Look upon the largest buffalo jump in America (a centuries-old hunting tool used by tribes) and listen to stories of Charles’ artwork from a Blackfeet perspective before marvelling at his paintings featuring scenes from the Old West.Â

Marvel at the Gates of the Mountains
Picture this; you’re relaxing onboard a boat cruising the Missouri River’s gentle waters. You’re marvelling at the limestone cliffs guarding the river’s edge. You’re chatting to your group mates and taking photos your friends back at home will be jealous of. Your boat approaches a set of towering stone walls that seem to open before you. You’ve made to the Gates of the Mountains, a place of untouched, natural beauty so magical you’ll never want to leave.Â

Montana FAQs
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
The best way to get to Montana depends on where you're travelling from, but visitors to the state either drive (if you're visiting from a neighbouring state) or catch a flight if you're visiting from the other side of the country or from overseas. Driving will often take longer but allows you greater flexibility to stop and soak in Montana's natural beauty along the way. It's also easily accessible via the state's three major interstates. If you're keen on flying, there are 5 international airports in various cities in Montana including airports in Billings, Missoula and the state's capital Helena. These airports offer plenty of both international and domestic flights with airlines such as American Airlines, Delta and United.Â
There really is no best time to visit Montana as there's plenty to do in each season. However, the most popular time to visit the outdoorsy state is during summer when the temperatures are warm without being too uncomfortable (average temp in the mid 20°Cs). But this also means increased accommodation and activity prices and larger crowds in cities and national parks. If you want to avoid the crowds but still enjoy nicer weather, the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn where the average temperatures are 14°C and 17°C respectively.Â
Montana is known to be an outdoorsy state, so remember to pack your hiking boots or comfortable walking shoes - chances are you'll be spending a lot of time outside (with good reason). You should also pack plenty of sun protective gear such as sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses, especially if you're travelling in summer. Other notable items to pack include:Â
- a reusable drink bottle
- a day bag/backpack
- a camera
- insect repellantÂ
Yes, technically Yellowstone National Park extends into Montana (and Idaho) but is largely located in the northwest corner of Wyoming.Â
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
