Going to Greece? Don’t leave without these essentials.
The dress code in Greece is generally relaxed. Most tavernas and bars are low-key, with travellers often heading straight to lunch or dinner from the beach.
Comfy clothing and a trusty pair of walking shoes are a must, as you'll likely spend a fair bit of time on your feet exploring ancient sites and old towns – many of which have uneven cobblestone streets.
Aim for light, breathable attire made of linen or cotton to stay cool in the summer. When visiting religious or cultural sites, make sure you have something to cover your shoulders and knees.
The weather can be cool, breezy and wet in winter, so pack a jacket and warmer layers.
In early spring and late autumn when the weather’s less predictable, bring a mix of layers so you can adjust as you go.

Seasonal clothing
Greek summers are hot – often reaching the high 30s°C – so pack loose layers. Think linen shorts or pants, floaty skirts and dresses. Also bring a light shirt for breezy evenings, especially on the islands or in the mountains. Swimwear is fine at the beach or beachside spots, but if you’re heading further afield, throw on a cover-up or light outfit.
Spring and autumn can be a mixed bag – especially in March/April and November – so bring a few options for cooler days and sunny spells. This includes a light jacket, umbrella, button-up shirts, a sweater and jeans or chinos.
For winter, pack warmer layers – including a waterproof jacket, thick jumper or fleece and water-resistant shoes for rainy days. If you’re heading to higher elevations where it snows, you'll also need thermals and a heavier jacket.
