It might not quite have the ‘je ne sais quoi’ that it did in the middle of the twentieth century, but the largest city in the country – an architectural assortment of Art Deco and Mauresque designs – is still a great place to kick off a Morocco adventure. Wander the Old Medina and city walls, then visit the shaded squares and souqs of the Quartier Habous. Make the semi-circle loop down to Marrakech through Fes’ mother of all medinas, taking in the unique colour of Chefchaouen, the ruins of Volubilis, and even riding a camel out to the sands of the Sahara.
