Itinerary
Welcome to Yellowstone National Park! This morning, you’ll be picked up from your hotel in Bozeman and driven by private vehicle to the starting point of your first walk among the incredible colours of Mammoth Hot Springs, grabbing breakfast along the way. When you arrive, lace up your boots and set off along the boardwalk, passing limestone terraces streaked with colourful microorganisms. Then, leave the crowds behind and hike the quiet paths of the Beaver Pond Trail. Walk through the forest and keep an eye out for bears, which are known to live in the area. The trail leads to a clearing with small ponds, where waterfowl are often seen, then continue up to a grassy hilltop – a grazing area for pronghorn antelope, deer and elk. After the hike, jump back in the van and drive through the park to your Feature Stay at Canyon Lodge. After settling into your accommodation in the heart of Yellowstone National Park, head out for dinner and get to know your fellow travellers and expert tour leader.

Your pre-trip orientation meeting will be done virtually on a conference call with your tour leader and the other guests at 5 pm the evening before your trip starts. Your leader will pick you up at your Bozeman hotel early in the next morning for transport to Yellowstone.
Your hiking distance today will be approximately 5 miles/8 km, with an elevation gain/loss of around 400ft/130m.
Your travel time today will be approximately 2.5 hours. If you plan on self-driving and meeting your group at the accommodation in Yellowstone today, you’ll miss the Mammoth Hot Springs walk and Beaver Pond trail hike.
This morning, set off on an inspiring hike along one of the park’s most scenic trails up to the summit of Mount Washburn, at 3122m the highest point you'll reach on this tour. As you ascend, the path winds through open subalpine meadows dotted with wildflowers. Keep an eye on the hillsides — bighorn sheep are often spotted grazing nearby. When you reach the summit, pause and take in sweeping views over the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. From here, you’ll also be able to see the Yellowstone Lake, the Teton Range and the Electric Peak. After hiking back down, take a short drive to the stunning Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone where you enjoy a short but picturesque hike out to Artist Point and incredible views of the majestic Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River. Learn about how the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone was formed during the glacial ice dam in Hayden Valley and explore the two thunderous waterfalls and multi-coloured canyon walls which the area is known for. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore nearby, or simply relax at the lodge after a satisfying day’s hiking.

Your hiking distance today will be approximately 6 miles/10 km, with an elevation gain/loss of around 1400ft/430m.
After breakfast, you’ll hike up through an old-growth pine forest and along the Elephant Back Mountain trail. From the peak at 2525m you can take in a bird’s eye views of Yellowstone Lake, which is where you’ll hike this afternoon. After hiking back down Elephant Back Mountain, you’ll travel by private vehicle to the starting point of your next hike, Storm Point. Starting at the often still waters of Indian Pond, you'll hike along the relatively flat trail through the forest before emerging at the wind-swept Storm Point, a bluff overlooking the shore of the hydrothermal fed Yellowstone Lake. Along the way, keep an eye out for bison and yellow-bellied marmots who call this area home. After the hike, drive deeper into the Park and settle into your accommodation near the legendary Old Faithful geyser.

Start the day by visiting the picturesque Upper Geyser Basin in Wyoming. Yellowstone is home to 60 per cent of the world’s geysers and most of them can be found here, including the famed Old Faithful itself. Hike along the boardwalks and experience the basins’ diverse array of geysers from thin fountains to massive eruptions. Then, head to Lone Star Geyser for today's hike. Follow the Firehole River to the biggest backcountry geyser in Yellowstone National Park, found in a clearing surrounded by dense forest. Every three hours, water erupts at full force from a shed-sized, cream-coloured mound, shooting 13 m into the air. This evening return to your comfortable lodge and maybe head out for dinner with your group and tour leader to celebrate the end of an inspiring hiking experience.

Your hiking distance today will be approximately 7 miles/11.5 km, with minimal elevation gain/loss.
Today, set off on your final hike through Yellowstone’s meadows and lodgepole pine forests to Fairy Falls. At 200 feet (61 m) high, this is one of Yellowstone's most spectacular waterfalls and the views from the relatively easy trail – including the stunning Grand Prismatic Spring Overlook - are well worth the hike. Then, head to Grand Prismatic itself – the largest and most colourful hot springs in the United States and one of the most iconic features in the park. After the hike it’s time to say goodbye to Yellowstone and travel back by private vehicle to Bozeman where your trip will come to an end. If you would like to stay longer, just speak to your booking agent ahead of time.

Before you book you should know
- This active hiking trip requires a good level of fitness, due to the varied terrain and potentially hot temperatures. Walking times vary between 3 and 6 hours a day, but the rewards are worth every step. Use of hiking poles and a daypack is included.
- Summer temperatures can be very hot, especially on trails that have little or no shade. It’s essential to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Please consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
- Some trails will require unexpected maintenance throughout the year, requiring closure of the trail. If that is the case you’ll take an alternative trail with similar features, distances and elevation where possible.
- To get to the best hiking trails in the region you’ll cover a lot of distance on this trip, but all in the comfort of our private vehicle.
- On our final day there is no accommodation included, but a transfer back to Bozeman is included on that day.
- Your itinerary order can change depending on temporary access restrictions, weather events, lodging availability and guest ability or injury.

1. Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup and transfer on Day 1 in Bozeman. Please see the Special information on Day 1 of this itinerary for more details. You are expected to arrive back into Bozeman in the afternoon of Day 5 (around 7pm).
2. There is no accommodation included on the last day in Yellowstone or Bozeman, however we can request any additional nights should you need them.
3. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement applies to all nights on your trip and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.
4. We are not able to book airport shuttle service for North America trips. North America has convenient taxi and rideshare options from all airports, as well as public transport systems in major hub cities. Please check the joining and finishing point instructions listed in the Essential Trip Information.
5. This trip is operated in conjunction with Wildland Trekking, a wholly owned Intrepid company and Intrepid's US hiking experts. You will see both brand's logos on this trip.
6. Our expert leaders are certified Yellowstone hiking guides and wilderness-certified first responders, and carry all necessary equipment including first aid kit, bear safety equipment, and 24/7 communications devices (InReach or Sat phone)
7. Entrance to the National Parks visited on this trip are included in your trip price. Travellers who are not residents of the US and are aged 16 years or older will need to pay Nonresident fees to enter National Parks included in this trip. These fees range from USD 100 to USD 250 per person and will be payable locally and in addition to your trip price. Please see the Money Matters section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.

Travel and visa requirements
Due to the complex booking situation of accommodation inside the National Park we use 3 different high quality hotels/lodges for the last 2 nights of this trip. Our accommodation options are the Old Faithful Inn and Old Faithful Snow Lodge in Old Faithful village, and the Grant Village hotel close to the shores of Yellowstone Lake. The hotels vary by departure so please check with your booking agent if you'd like to confirm which hotel you will be staying in. Regardless of which hotel is on your specific departure you will always spend both nights there rather than having to swap hotels for a single night.

Description
Canyon Lodge is a large, historic national park hotel spread over 5 'lodges', and is among the most popular accommodation in Yellowstone. Ideally situated on the east side of the park near the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River and Upper and Lower Falls, it puts you right in the heart of action. The hotel is a LEED Certified lodge, ensuring a stay that supports environmental sustainability.
Instructions
Intrepid provides a free shuttle from nearby Bozeman, with an early morning pickup (approx. 7am) from a pre-arranged central location in Bozeman on Day 1. See Day 1 of the trip itinerary for more details. Bozeman has an airport served by United, Delta, Horizon Air, Northwest, Skywest, Allegiant Air and Frontier Airlines. There is no regular shuttle service from the Bozeman Airport to a downtown location but taxis are readily available.
If you plan to self-drive, Canyon Lodge has a dedicated carpark however it is subject to additional fees - please contact the hotel directly to arrange this. Please note the road into the Yellowstone National Park are usually very congested in peak travel times such as national holidays, school holiday, etc. so we strongly recommend allowing extra driving time during these periods.
