Take on an epic adventure packed with wildlife, waterfalls and wide plains
Time to break out your best Attenborough impression – you’re going on safari with a small group of legends! This nine-day trip doesn’t skimp on the savanna, but it mainly follows the rivers and watering holes that sustain life (human and wild) throughout Africa. Learn about the world’s largest succulents when you see baobabs during a 4WD adventure to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, where you’ll camp overnight. Plus, see elephants and warthogs while you cruise down the Okavango Delta in a dugout mokoro canoe. How many species can you spot on a search for wildlife in Chobe National Park?

Sawubona! Welcome to South Africa. Touch down in Jo’burg (as the locals like to call it) where your adventure begins, ready for your welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight. If you arrive early, maybe visit the Apartheid Museum to start your journey with some local history, crucial in understanding this region. After your meeting, why not head out for a group dinner and get to know your fellow travellers. Your leader can point you in the right direction if you’re looking for local bars and restaurant recommendations.
- Hotel (1 night)
There are no meals included on this day.
- Johannesburg - Apartheid Museum - ZAR190
It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.
If you explore Johannesburg on your own, please make sure that you get local advice on where it is safe to walk, especially in the evening. We recommend your wear a money belt, walk with purpose and avoid ostentatious displays of wealth.
See ya South Africa – this morning, you’ll cross the border into Botswana and travel to the Khama Rhino Sanctuary. It sits on the Kalahari Desert and is an old hunting area transformed into a conservation project. It now protects what’s left of Botswana's black and white rhino populations, but you can also see zebras, giraffes, leopards, ostriches and wildebeest, all of which chill out around the natural waterholes. Not only do you get to check out the animals here, but you’ll also be benefitting local communities and helping protect the white rhino. When the sun begins to set, hop in a jeep to see the rhinos at their most active. About 35 rhinos roam around this 400-hectare community-based reserve, so don’t forget your binoculars!

Get up nice and early and drive to Maun. When you arrive, you’ll have the chance to stock up on any supplies you might need for the journey ahead. This town is the gateway to one of the world's most renowned and complex ecosystems – the Okavango Delta, a 16,000-sq-km maze of wetlands made up of waterways, green islands, lush plains and loads of wildlife. You might see hippos, crocodiles, elephants and big cats within the diverse ecosystem here. Tonight, you'll camp on the outskirts of Maun.

Tonight’s campsite is basic with shared facilities, wi-fi and optional upgrades.
Make your way to the north to the Okavango Delta. Leave the truck and jump aboard a traditional mokoro – a dugout canoe steered by friendly local 'polers' – to reach your campsite in the bush. Your accommodation for the next two nights is on a remote island right in the heart of the wilderness. When you arrive, set up camp, take in the incredible views of the Delta and relax on the edge of the water for the rest of the afternoon. While you’re here, there’s the option to go on a bush walk where you might catch a glimpse of some of the wildlife including elephants and Cape buffalo. Get to know your mokoro polers and maybe even have a go at navigating a mokoro yourself! Tonight, watch as the sunset turns into a brilliant sky full of stars, far away from any light pollution. Then, fall asleep to the sounds of the wilderness.

Today, you get to paddle the mighty Delta. There's nothing more relaxing than feeling the African sun on your face as you lie back in a mokoro, while your expert poler propels you down calm waters through papyrus and reed beds to lily-covered lagoons. Watch out for elephants, lechwe, warthogs and sitatunga on a quick bush walk, then stop at one of the islands for a swim before returning to camp. If you are interested in the culinary side of Southern Africa, feel free to join your cook for a cooking class while they prepare tonight's meal.

Wake up to the sounds of the Delta this morning, then drive to Gweta – a small town sitting near the stunning Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, which are some of the largest on earth, covering around 12,000 sq km (4640 sq mi). When you arrive, have lunch and freshen up, then head out on a 4WD adventure. First, you’ll make the scenic drive towards the salt pans, taking in the scenery from your open vehicle. Along the way, you’ll make a stop to learn about the iconic baobab trees that scatter the landscape and see the trees up close. After, continue towards the salt pans, where you’ll stop for sundowners as you watch the sky change colours over the vast landscape. Join your group for dinner under the open sky tonight. Do some stargazing and spend the night camped in this remote landscape, soaking up the stillness.

Today’s Makgadikgadi Salt Pans experience is seasonal and runs from April to October. It's also weather dependent, so may run slightly differently if the pans are too wet. In cases where it’s not possible to camp in the salt pans themselves, you will spend the night camping on one of the islands near the pans. The rest of today’s itinerary will remain the same.
You’ll need to pack an overnight bag for tonight’s camp. Your main bag will be securely stored with the overland truck in Gweta.
There will be a long drop bush toilet at tonight’s campsite, set up 50 m away from the group for privacy.
Have breakfast at your camp this morning, then pack up and drive back to Gweta. You’ll have some time to freshen up in Gweta, then hit the road again for the drive to Chobe National Park. Make sure you’ve got some good tunes or a book ready for the drive. You have a free evening to relax at your camp.

Head out on a safari in Chobe National Park this morning. There's a huge range of wildlife here, all packed into one tiny area, making it unlike anywhere else in the world! Huge herds of buffalo and elephants are often seen roaming around the savanna, matched by the size of the local lion prides. An estimated 70,000 Kalahari elephants roam the park, too – these amazing beasts are the largest known subspecies of elephant in the world. You might also see zebras, impalas, wildebeest, giraffes, lions, leopards, hyenas, jackals, warthogs, baboons, monkeys and heaps of birds. Tonight, you’ll have free time to either rest or jump into some optional activities, like a sunset safari or river cruise.

You may notice businesses offering an optional 'Walk with the Lions' experience. As a business with a strict Responsible Travel policy, we ask all Intrepid travellers to avoid this activity. While wildlife viewing is a big part of many of our itineraries, we strive to only view animals in their natural habitats. The lion walking industry directly contributes to the captive breeding and canned hunting of lions. Before you book you should know
- This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent, occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities and getting the best possible views of Africa's iconic wildlife. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows, which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The drive days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/africa/overland.
- As this trip only has limited time in Victoria Falls, we highly recommend staying a few extra days after your trip to enjoy all this amazing destination has to offer.
- The African wild comes alive at sunrise, so there will be some early starts for safaris or to beat the traffic on long travel days. The thrill of spotting your first lion or rhino is well worth the early start!
- Camping out in the amazing Okavango wilderness and Makgadikgadi Salt Pans means digging a bush toilet and going without a shower. It's all part of the experience.
- This trip is a great way to see a lot in a short period of time, and it can be part of a longer itinerary if you have more time to explore. You might like to check out 18 to 35s Real Southern Africa (UBYSC).
1. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement applies to all nights of your trip and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.
2. This trip finishes upon arrival in Victoria Falls on Day 9. Please do not book any flights until after 9pm this evening.
3. Border crossing delays in the region can be sporadic and difficult to predict. What takes an hour one day may take four hours the next. This may affect the order of activities in the itinerary. We understand this uncertainty can be frustrating, and we strongly recommend packing a bit of patience and flexibility.
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a third-party. The "Add connection" feature shows transit visa requirements only and does not include full entry visa needs. Please note, additional service fees apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa.
Travel and visa requirements
Accommodation on this trip is mainly in two-person canvas dome tents with camping mattresses supplied.
The type and variety of accommodation are determined by conditions on each of our routes. Each route is different - on some, we use a mixture of campsites and wild camps; on others, we also use hotels. In Africa, it's not usually practical to camp when staying in towns and cities, so we use hotel accommodations and eat out in local restaurants.
There may be the occasional night stop when we stay on the grounds of a hotel or at a campsite, which may also have rooms/cabins available. In this case, there may be a choice of camping or upgrading to a room. Rooms cost approximately USD 40-100 per room per night for a twin room and cannot be pre-booked. Standards of these rooms vary greatly, and we recommend viewing the room before purchasing the night's accommodation. The day-by-day itinerary advises when upgrades may be possible (subject to availability).
Keep in mind that if we are staying in dormitory accommodation, you may have to share with other passengers or be split into same-sex rooms.
Campsites do have facilities, but they usually aren't to the same standard you would find in Western countries. For example, the bathroom facilities can be very basic. Toilet paper is rarely provided, and shower facilities can be as simple as a hose pipe spurting out cold water. Wild camps have no facilities at all.
At times, there may be spare tents in the vehicles. Unfortunately, these cannot be used without the purchase of a single supplement. This is to ensure the tents avoid wear and tear or are clean and ready for the customers arriving on the next section of the trip.

Instructions
Intrepid can assist with pre-booking an arrival transfer from the airport - enquire with your agent. Please advise your flight arrival details at least 14 days prior to your departure. Note that Johannesburg has two airports, Lanseria and OR Tambo International, so double-check your arrival airport.
We recommend pre-booking an arrival transfer, especially if this is your first time in Johannesburg or if you are travelling alone, to ensure a seamless and stress-free start to your trip.
If you have pre-booked a transfer, your driver will be waiting for you at the Information Counter in your respective arrival terminal (domestic/international). There are often large crowds here, so please look carefully for your transfer representative, who will be holding an Intrepid sign. Please ask them to confirm your name, and do not travel with anyone who cannot verify your name. Neither the driver nor any representative should ask you for additional payment.
If you cannot find your transfer driver, contact our local representative at +27 84 400 8896 or on WhatsApp at +27 84 40 08896, available 24/7. In case of flight cancellations or delays over an hour, please contact our local office using the number in the ‘Problems and Emergency Contact Information’ section. Local pre-paid SIM cards are available in the OR Tambo Arrivals Hall.
If making your own way to the joining hotel, there are several transport options available:
Metered taxis: Official airport metered taxis are available outside the arrivals exit doors. The journey takes 30–60 minutes, depending on traffic, and costs approximately ZAR400–650, payable directly to the driver.
Ride Share: Ride-share services like Uber are widely available in South Africa and often more affordable than metered taxis depending on traffic and demand. We recommend downloading the app and setting up your payment details before leaving your home country.
