Depending on the trip you choose, the train route usually means more time in Cusco while the other travellers in your group start their trek. As a UNESCO-listed city and former capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco is packed with culture, history and mouthwatering food, so take your time wandering its cobbled streets and and snacking your way through the markets.
From Cusco, it's a 2-hour drive to Ollantaytambo, followed by a 90-minute train through the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes. From there, you can catch a 30-minute bus to Machu Picchu – or if you have energy to burn, hike the steep 1.5-hour stone path to the top.
A local guide will then meet you at the entrance for a 1.5-hour tour and bring the ruins to life.
