How can I travel from Kununurra to the Bungle Bungles?
Known for its iconic beehive-like, natural sandstone formations, the Bungle Bungles range is a beloved Aussie landmark that is visited by thousands of travellers every year. With heaps of hikes to trek and gorges to explore, it's easy to spend multiple days wandering among some of Mother Nature's best work, and sleeping under the Western Australian starts at night.Â
Due to the range's remote location, one of the most popular places to travel from if you're wanting to reach the Bungle Bungles is to go via Kununurra, a small town in the Kimberley region in the northern part of Western Australia. While it's not the closest town to Purnululu National Park (where the Bungle Bungles are nestled), it's easy to drive and catch a flight from Kununurra, making the journey as convenient and time-efficient as possible.Â
Driving from Kununurra to the Bungle BunglesÂ
While driving from Kununurra to the Bungle Bungles isn't easy, it is an extremely popular and cheap option. However, it's not the quickest. Traveling between the two destinations takes just over 5 hours if you follow the Great Northern Highway and turn off when you come to the access track for Purnululu National Park. The whole journey is around 250km, with the access track being one of the most difficult parts of the whole trip due to the rough and rugged surface. The track itself is only 53km but it's recommended to drive at a slower pace to avoid any damage to your vehicle.Â
Because the access road into the Bungle Bungles is quite challenging, only high clearance 4WD (four-wheel drive) vehicles are allowed to travel along it so keep that in mind when figuring out how to get to the park.Â
Catching a flight from Kununurra to the Bungle BunglesÂ
The quickest option for travelling from Kununurra to the Bungle Bungles is by plane. Western Australian company Aviair offers various scenic flights between the two destinations, with the quickest flight taking around 2 hours. While the flight itself does cost around AUD$400, it's a great way to see more of the national park and surrounding regions than you usually would with the route taking you over the Bungle Bungles themselves, Lake Argyle, the Osmond Ranges, and the Bow River.Â
You can also fly to the Bungle Bungles via a private/charted aircraft which will land at Bellburn Airstrip.Â
