Some popular local pintxos you might try are tortilla de patatas, patatas bravas, grilled mushrooms, grilled chistorra (chorizo) and croquetas. Many of these bars are known for a particular specialty, so have fun working your way through the dishes, maybe pairing them with a corto (small glass of beer), a glass of txakoli (Basque sparkling wine) or rioja. Why choose us
We’re adventure travel experts with decades of experience and proud to run trips in over 100 countries.
We keep our group sizes small and our experiences big, so you can get more out of your travels.
Leaders don’t just show off a destination, they’re the heart and soul of our trips.
The Intrepid Foundation gives back globally and our B Corp status is proof that we're dedicated to creating a positive impact.
Before you book you should know
- It’s bunking season! As accommodation on this trip is multi-share, solo travellers will share a room with other travellers of the same gender. This is an excellent opportunity to get to know other like-minded people. Travellers on the same booking may be split between rooms due to the single-gender dormitories.
- This trip is designed for travellers who value their independence but also want the benefit of a local leader and a group to share the experience with. The itinerary has plenty of free time where your leader will suggest optional activities. Please budget spending money for these activities and transport to and from them.
- The best way to experience a city is by doing as the locals do – that means using public transport such as trams, trains, buses and metro at some locations. This will give you an authentic look at daily life, but be aware you may find yourself sharing a busy bus ride with local commuters. The trains used on this trip are comfortable and all have toilets, but these can also be very busy.
- We recommend packing light for this trip as you'll be required to carry your own luggage between train stations, buses and hotels, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs and across cobblestones. A travel towel can come in handy when staying in European hostels. Refer to the Packing section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.
- Summer temperatures can be very high in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Please keep in mind that many European hotel rooms are not equipped with air conditioning. In winter, warm, waterproof layers will be needed as snow and rain can be expected. Carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
- This trip can be part of a longer itinerary if you have more time to explore. You might like to check out 18 to 35s Essential Europe (ZMYYC) or 18 to 35s Epic Europe Adventure (ZMYPC).
A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement is only available on Days 1, 8 & 9 (Multi-share Hostel) and 2 & 3 (Multi-share Hotel) and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a third-party. The "Add connection" feature shows transit visa requirements only and does not include full entry visa needs. Please note, additional service fees apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa.
Travel and visa requirements
The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation.
Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.
We've sourced our accommodation very carefully and picked the best possible hotels in line with the Intrepid 18 to 35s style of travel. Our first accommodation choice is always as close to the main attraction of the destination as possible, however, sometimes we are not in the right centre of action, which means you may need to hop on public transport to get to the city centre. Service and accommodation in Europe may be different to the standards you are used to. Your accommodation will not always have private en suite facilities or air-conditioning and rooms can be small.
OCCASIONAL ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION
The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline. On rare occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our usual accommodation. A similar standard of accommodation will be used in these instances.
ROOMING ALLOCATION
Accommodation on this trip is on a twin/multi-share basis. We pair up solo travellers with other travellers of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports.
CHECK-IN TIME
Throughout the trip we request that our hotels prepare rooms in time for your arrival, especially if you're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However this isn't always possible which means you won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, you can store your luggage and go exploring.
PRE/POST TRIP ACCOMMODATION
If you've purchased pre-trip or post-trip accommodation (if available), you may be required to change rooms from your trip accommodation for these extra nights.
