Intrepid Travel expands accommodation portfolio with iconic Australian outback acquisition

April 2026

Intrepid Travel the world’s largest adventure travel company, has acquired Ooraminna Station Homestead in Central Australia, marking a further step in its expansion beyond tours and into experience-led accommodation.

The acquisition supports Intrepid’s 2030 growth strategy and reflects increasing demand for curated, immersive stays that offer a deeper connection to destination, particularly within the domestic market.

Located 30 kilometres south of Alice Springs in Australia’s iconic outback, the 200 hectares Ooraminna Station property features private cabins, glamping tents and a campground, alongside a restaurant, pool and natural billabong, set against the backdrop of Ooraminna Hills. The homestead has also served as a set for Australian film and television productions including for Ted Egan's The Drover's Boy. The nature-based Ooraminna property  will give Intrepid travellers a more immersive way to experience Central Australia, connecting them with the region’s landscape, culture and community. The property will soon be bookable via Intrepid’s website and integrated into its broader product offering.

Brett Mitchell, Intrepid Travel ANZ Managing Director said: “This acquisition is an important step in our ambition to lead low-impact, nature-based travel and invest in the future of Australian tourism. We’re seeing continued demand for experience-rich stays in regional Australia, and properties like Ooraminna allow us to create deeper connections to place, community and culture.”

Marie-Clare Boothby Minister for Tourism and Hospitality welcomed the announcement as further evidence that confidence is growing in the Territory’s economy and in the Red Centre. “Ooraminna Station Homestead is an iconic destination in the Central Australian outback. This investment by Intrepid is more than just a new chapter for Ooraminna – it’s yet another signal of growing confidence in our visitor economy and in the economic future of Central Australia.”

Suzana Bishop, Northern Territory Department of Tourism and Hospitality Chief Executive said: “Ooraminna Station Homestead is a unique venue and accommodation site that allows visitors to soak up the stunning Central Australian outback. Intrepid’s investment further supports the NT visitor economy by providing unique experiences that can only be found here.”

Intrepid plans to expand the property with an additional 10 rooms designed for families and couples, alongside upgrades to facilities and new on-site experiences.

The acquisition is the latest in a series of investments by Intrepid as it builds out its accommodation offering in key destinations.
