Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand. Markets, all the good street food, beaches, temples, snorkelling, more food, ancient sites, homestays, drinks, long-tail boat rides and more food. If that sounds good, it’s time to take a 20-day adventure through Southeast Asia to the incredible Angkor complex, the bustling streets of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and the serene waters of Cat Ba Island. Get active with cycling tours and hiking options and learn about everyday village life in Sambo Prei Kuk. Tour the incredible natural beauty of Ninh Binh and kick back on the paradisial beaches of Koh Rong Island. End it all in Bangkok, Thailand, where you can jet set home (to brag of an awesome trip well-travelled) or extend your stay and beach-it-up in another Southeast Asian gem.

Why you'll love this trip
  • Chill out in the cultural mixed bag of Hoi An and hit up the local beach, cycle through rice paddies or get some sweet threads tailor-made. Then, pick your own ingredients for lunch during a garden-to-table experience with a local chef.
  • Who'd have thought green seas and giant mossy rocks could be so pretty? Take in the views of Lan Ha Bay by kayak as you explore the limestone islands during your visit to Cat Ba Island.
  • Cycle around the ancient temples and expansive fields in Nin Binh – a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. With loads of free time, you can hike to Mua Cave or take a boat down in Tam Coc to the nearby caves.
  • A homestay in rural Sambor Prei Kuk puts you right in the heart of everyday village life in Cambodia – cycle through the village for the best perspective and see locals working the rice fields or getting stuck into handicrafts.
  • See the sunrise over the incredible Angkor complex and take a guided Tuk-tuk tour of all the best sites (including Angkor Wat and jungle-covered Ta Prohm) with a company focused on employing local women in the community.

Is this trip right for you?
  • This trip is for travellers who appreciate a bit of independence. You'll get plenty of free time in each location to make your own choices, do your own activities and eat where you like. Your leader is always there to give you tips and suggestions.
  • You’ll cover a lot of distance on this trip, including on overnight trains. Accommodation and amenities are shared and basic, but the experience of rubbing shoulders with the locals makes it all worthwhile. For more about this experience, see our blog post here: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/adventures/what-to-expect-on-an-overnight.
  • Temperatures and humidity can be high in Cambodia, especially when walking around sights like the Angkor complex, where there may be little shade. Be prepared by taking plenty of drink breaks and wearing appropriate skin protection. Some travellers find an umbrella handy to keep the sun off (this will also come in handy if it rains!).
  • You will visit a number of temples on this trip, and this requires a level of modesty. Be sure to bring clothes that cover your arms and pants or skirts that go past the knees. A light scarf is also a good idea for covering shoulders and arms when it’s hot.
  • You'll be spending a night with a local family on this trip. While the accommodation is shared and basic, this is a great opportunity to connect with the local people (and enjoy delicious home-cooked meals!). I would definitely recommend going on this trip! The tour leaders are so helpful and it’s a good balance between socialising and having some independence. The food and activities provided are great. It is quite a fast-paced trip, but if that is your travel style you’ll love it!

This is such a great trip to experience all the highlights of Vietnam and Cambodia without feeling like you are speeding through each place too fast.

My experience was overwhelmingly positive. The pacing of the trip is pretty fast, but if that's your style (as it is mine) you'll have an amazing time. My leaders Kien (Vietnam) and Toneth (Cambodia) were both amazing guys and I felt lucky to have them. This was my first intrepid trip but it won't be my last. All of the inclusions were great.
