Why you'll love this trip
  • Experience the breadth of Iceland's incredible natural phenomena - ancient volcanic rock formations, black pebble beaches, glacial lakes and geothermal lagoons.
  • Travel with an experienced local leader who will explain geographic features, share stories of Iceland’s history and folklore and narrate your nightly sky watching with the science behind aurora borealis.
  • Stay in the stylish Fosshotel for your Feature Stay, offering up priceless views of the surrounding landscape, modern comforts and an excellent restaurant that uses the freshest Icelandic produce.
  • Embrace two incredible Exclusive Experiences; a home cooked dinner on a local farm, and a relaxing dip in the wonderfully scenic Krauma thermal pools.
  • This trip is designed to give you the best chance at seeing the spectacular dancing lights of the aurora borealis in the northern sky.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Eden Reforestation Projects. Donations help them provide local employment opportunities and tackle climate change one tree at a time as they restore forests across 10 different countries.

Is this trip right for you?
  • The northern lights are most visible during the colder months, when temperatures can reach -15 °C or below and snow is very likely. It's important to bring appropriate clothing such as a down jacket, thermals layers, gloves and suitable footwear.
  • Many locations on this itinerary are remote, which means a few long drives. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the scenery and spend some time getting to know your fellow travellers.
  • While there is a strong chance of seeing the northern lights in all their colourful glory (thanks to the high latitude, time of year and itinerary), nature makes no guarantees. On the rare occasion that your leader must alter the itinerary due to adverse weather, alternative activities will be offered.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Jam packed itinerary with a mixture of adventure and relaxing stops. Fascinating country with out of this world landscapes. For me our guide Kristjan took this trip to another level with stories of local legends n history and random stops he thought we'd like (we totally did) like a geothermal power station. Came back from this trip buzzing and wanting to go back. It is an expensive place to visit but TOTALLY worth it!!

My premium trip to Iceland in winter with Intrepid Travel as an amazing experience! The hotels, the tour guide/leader, the sites, the food was all top notch. There was a great balance of planned/included activities and meals with opportunities to go off on our own and explore. Our guide was knowledgeable and kept our group on track - he even got us all fermented shark and Icelandic schnapps to try! While that was quite the 1-2 combo, I'm so glad I tried it! And while I realize intrepid can't take credit for us seeing the Northern Lighta 4 nights in a row, it was just the cherry on top of an amazing trip!

This trip was fantastic. We got to see so much of Iceland (including 3 straight nights of Aurora!), we had a group of great people, and Ziggy was a sensational tour leader!

A truly excellent trip, there is so so much more to Iceland than Reykjavik, waterfalls, geysers and hot springs. So much to see, the scenery from flat lava fields, to mountainous glaciers, volcanos, and rock formations is just spectacular, you will not want to nap on the bus. Absolutely amazing to walk along the fault line of a tectonic plate and then a couple of days later the foot of an outlet glacier. Our guide, Thor, with his knowledge of Iceland, his story telling of ogres and the hidden people, and a brilliant entertainer to boot was top notch. Go to Iceland, you won't be disappointed. PS It's windy, you'll need a good hat.

Going to Iceland was a beautiful trip. We stayed at a variety of accommodations and saw the sites of Iceland"s Golden Circle. Having a small group (11) meant we could stop and see things off the beaten path. We saw and experienced the many glaciers, waterfalls, lava fields and thermal spas that Iceland has to offer. Simply a great adventure.
