Why you'll love this trip
- Discover Delhi, both new and old, with a guided walking tour of its historic walled heart and, if you like, a rickshaw ride through the Chandni Chowk marketplace.
- Explore Mumbai at your own pace, maybe delving into the incredible heritage quarter, checking out the circus-like Chowpatty Beach or finding a chai wallah for a spot of tea – it’s up to you!
- Witness the one and only Taj Mahal – one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Seeing this Mughal marvel for the first time, in all its dazzling white marble, is a moment you won’t forget.
- Go beyond the beach in Goa, stepping past the beautiful golden sand (though that’s a great way to spend a day, too!) – you could opt to tour an organic spice farm and gorge on a sumptuously spiced Goan feast instead.
- Stroll through Jaipur and Udaipur with your local leader and uncover the secrets of two of India’s most delightful destinations, both with very different street scenes.
Itinerary
Welcome to India! Arrive in the fun and frenetic capital of Delhi and settle into your hotel. Visit the Jama Masjid – Delhi’s oldest (and India’s largest) mosque, opt to go inside – and then stop by the Sheeshganj Gurudwara (Sikh Temple). This site may well exceed your expectations as the light shimmers off its white marble surface. Best known as a monument to love and loss, the 17th-century Taj is a beautiful example of Mughal architecture, surrounded by trimmed English gardens. The highlights keep coming as you take a motorised rickshaw tour around town – a great way to see the monuments of Agra. You can also visit Akbar’s Mausoleum, a beautiful sandstone and marble tomb built for the greatest of the Mughal emperors. Stop off for an optional meal at Sheroes Hangout – a cafe that supports victims of acid attacks.

Travel to Pushkar by public bus and then private vehicle via the town of Ajmer. Pushkar is one of India’s holiest towns and a market centre for the surrounding villages. Head out to explore the town on a walking tour with your group, stopping in at the main bazaar. Here you’ll come across anything from 1960s fashion and glass lamps to jewellery and traditional Rajasthani puppets. After, you’ll have free time to spend as you wish. Later in the day, you’ll visit the colourful Brahma Temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu god-creator Brahma. If you’re lucky enough to be in town for the Pushkar Camel Fair (held annually in November), you can experience one of India’s most famous festivals tonight. Later, maybe ask your leader for some recommendations on the best local eats.
- Hotel (1 night)

The Pushkar Camel Fair is held in November each year. We will do all we can to ensure that travellers booked with a trip to coincide with the fair will get an opportunity to see the best of the festival, but we cannot take responsibility if the dates of the fair change. Pushkar hotels raise their rates considerably during the festival, so departures across this period may be at a higher price. Although we make bookings months in advance, accommodation in Pushkar tends to overbook at this time. We ask for a flexible approach from people travelling at this time as accommodation, the order of activities and type of transport may need to change.
Continue to your next destination today, travelling by private vehicle back to Ajmer and then day train to Udaipur. Known as the ‘Venice of the East’, this white city is often regarded as the most romantic in India. Set amid the Aravalli Hills, Udaipur curls around a huge lake. When you travel with us, The Intrepid Foundation gives you more opportunities to support important causes in destinations you visit.
Why choose us
We’re adventure travel experts with decades of experience and proud to run trips in over 100 countries.
We keep our group sizes small and our experiences big, so you can get more out of your travels.
Leaders don’t just show off a destination, they’re the heart and soul of our trips.
The Intrepid Foundation gives back globally and our B Corp status is proof that we're dedicated to creating a positive impact.
Before you book you should know
- It’s important to prepare for hot, sticky temperatures during the day and cooler climates in the evening. Light layers are the best way to tackle this disparity in weather. Please use adequate sun protection and drink plenty of water.
- We visit several temples on this trip, which requires a certain level of modesty. Please bring clothes that cover the arms and pants/skirts that go past the knees. A light scarf is also a good idea for covering shoulders and arms when it’s hot.
- This trip involves some early starts and long overnight train journeys, including a 9 hour overnight train to Goa. Sleeper trains are a quintessential Indian travel experience. They’re a great way to travel long distances and maximise your time in each place. You’ll be travelling alongside locals, as well as Intrepid travellers, in a compartment of mixed genders. You’ll find more details about the experience in the Accommodation section of the Essential Trip Information, or you can read more about it here: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/adventures/india-trains-guide/
- You will also be travelling by local bus. While conditions are basic, this is a chance to enjoy the passing scenery.
- There is plenty of free time for your optional activities on this trip, so please make sure you budget for things you may like to do during your spare time.
- We've sourced our accommodation carefully and picked the best possible hotels in line with the Intrepid style of travel. Service and accommodation in India may be different from western standards.
ACCOMMODATION:
Some of the accommodation along the way is basic or simple, staying in local guesthouses and homestays. Some may have shared bathroom facilities with cold water only. We use a mixture of air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned rooms. Some areas of India experience daily load shedding. This is where the power may be turned off at certain times of the day and usually occurs for a few hours in the early afternoon. Most hotel properties have a restaurant or cafe serving local meals. Many restaurants and hotels do not serve alcohol for religious reasons or due to local laws.
SHOWERS:
Showers at some hotels only have hot water at peak times (usually morning and evening). Outside of these times, you may need to speak to reception to obtain hot water.
ROOM ISSUES:
If you have any issues with your room, please speak to the hotel and your tour leader right away rather than your travel agent so that the problem can be addressed without delay.
SLEEPER TRAINS IN INDIA
Sleeper trains are clean and air-conditioned. They’re a great way to travel long distances and maximise your time in each place. Depending on the route, you’ll travel in 2AC or 3AC class. Not all classes are available on all routes.
2AC carriages (second class or 2 tier AC carriages) have four sleeping berths in the compartment section and two berths in the aisle bay.
3AC carriages (third class or 3 tier AC carriages) have six sleeping berths in the compartment section and two berths in the aisle bay.
During the day, sleeping berths are folded away and serve as seats. Each sleeping berth has a padded mattress with sheets, pillow and a blanket provided. Some travellers like to bring their own sleeping sheet.
Your luggage travels with you in the compartment, so packing light will make your journey more comfortable.
Each carriage has a limited number of sinks and charging points. There are toilets at both ends of the carriage, one a western-style toilet and the other a squat toilet. You will need to bring your own toilet paper, and you may like to bring sanitiser wipes.
Some trains have a dining carriage, but there’s no shortage of vendors who board at each station, selling tea, coffee, snacks and local favourites. You can also grab something at the station before boarding your train, or at a station en route.
Sleeping berths are allocated by Indian Railways’ reservation system, which we have no influence over. Regardless of when tickets are booked, your group may not travel together, with sleeping berths spread throughout a carriage, or multiple carriages, of the same class. You may share a compartment with local travellers of mixed genders. Your leader will do their best to swap with other travellers to enable people who booked together to travel together, but this isn’t always possible. Your leader may ask male travellers to swap with female travellers due to safety considerations.
Due to the complexity of the ticket purchasing system and high demand for tickets, we are unable to offer upgrades to other classes.
